Coined a “National Treasure” by Sad Mag, Toronto’s Skye Wallace writes gutsy, passionate folk-rock, and is a storyteller at heart. Skye’s music has been described as quintessentially “Canadian”, and the content of her lyrics is often rooted in Canadian history. Skye tells stories of tragedy, hardship, warmth and comedy, particularly from the perspective of resilient women. Songs like “Ain’t it Hell” depict a woman moving to the prairies during the Dominion Lands Act of 1872 who struggles to find comfort in her new home, while “Carry Our Son” tells the story of a woman losing her son in a mining accident in northern Ontario, who is simultaneously angry with, and dependent upon her notion of God.
Wallace’s most recent album “Something Wicked”, produced by Jim Bryson, has seen significant airplay on CBC and Sirius Satellite Radio and charted for several months on Earshot. The album’s release included two Canadian tours, a European tour, and showcases at FolkAlliance International in Kansas City and FMO in Toronto. Skye has received acclaim from Noisey/Vice, Exclaim and CBC, and was featured on ChartAttack’s 2017 Top 10 Canadian Female Artists list.
Fresh off a residency in Bonne Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Skye will spend the month of January in the historic Macaulay Residence researching and writing material for a double EP inspired by both residencies and the stories of strong, resilient people in very different, remote corners of Canada. While in Dawson, Skye will also facilitate a workshop, host a radio show on cfyt, and participate in a Songwriters Circle. More details to come!
This one-night-only event is sure to be a powerful and moving night of music. See you in the ballroom!
