GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Artist Demonstration Tent (located on front street, between the gazebo and the Art Market) offers a wide variety of artist demonstrations, many of them interactive (hands-on and kid-friendly!) in a range of artistic mediums. Past examples include wood carving, stained glass, blacksmithing, porcupine quill weaving, beading, printmaking, willow weaving, watercolours, cyanotypes, (etc). We love new ideas and encourage those in all mediums to apply.
The Demo Tent will be open 1 – 6pm on Saturday and Sunday of the festival, June 3rd and 4th. Artists may choose to demo on one or both days. Demonstrations can be hands-on or hands-off, though we do encourage a hands-on element.
Artists are compensated a flat rate of $375/day.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Review the following information and fill in the application at the bottom of this page.
SELECTION:
Applications are juried and artists will be notified of status as soon as possible, after the deadline has passed.
ARTIST RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Artists are responsible for the transportation, set up and tear down of their demonstration, including transportation to/from Dawson.
- Demonstrating artists will be given set up times and tear down times that correspond with their chosen dates and must be present and participating for the entirety of the Demo Tent hours.
- Artists are responsible for providing their own supplies and materials. KIAC may be able to assist in some cases with small items (i.e. scissors), please mention this when detailing your set up requirements.
- Artwork cannot be sold at the Demo Tent. If demonstrating artists wish to sell their work, they may do so by booking a table in the Art Market and having it run by a friend or volunteer. Please contact admin@kiac.ca for more info.
- Artists are welcome to bring printed items promoting their works and/or practice, such as business cards.
- Artists are responsible for their own accommodations while visiting Dawson City for the festival. There are hotels, B&B’s, campgrounds and RV parks in the Dawson area. The best way to find out information about accommodations is through the Visitor Information Centre @ 867-993-5566. We recommend booking as early as you can, since it is a very busy weekend in Dawson.
REGARDING HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES:
A small fee may be charged to the public to recover the cost of materials. It is recommended to keep fees under $10. Artists are responsible for collecting their own fees.
KIAC encourages hands-on activities on a drop-in basis. Participants like to try things but are not necessarily prepared to complete a time-consuming project. This is part of the interactive festival atmosphere and we encourage it.
The Demo Tent is a meant to be an opportunity to casually try out various mediums and learn the basics, but we also welcome artists who do not offer a hands-on component and instead showcase their techniques and craft.
