In the ODD Gallery: Youth Art Enrichment 2005

The idea of an enrichment program for young artists was originally envisioned at a meeting between representatives from KIAC and the Department of Education.  Since that meeting in 2001, KIAC has gone on to develop enrichment courses for Yukon students who have interest and ability in visual arts.  35-40 students from grades 8 to 12 across the territory gather in Dawson annually for 5 days of specialized instruction with practicing, professional artists.

The 2005 courses:

Handmade Prints with instructor Meshell Melvin.

Students explored multiple and diverse methods for creating and printing images.  Trying monoprints in acrylic paint, collagraphs printed from hand made textured surfaces, linocuts, monotype drawings, etc.  Students created patterns for paper or fabric with potatoes, found objects, almost anything & everything.

Wood Carving with instructor Eugene Alfred.

Students hand-carved a wooden knife/letter opener using traditional First Nations designs and techniques.  Students learned about form, line and structure in relation to First Nations design and art.

Creative Mixed Media with instructor Valerie Salez
Students explored artistic possibilities by combining various materials and objects to create collages, books, sculptures and more. Learning ways of incorporating painting, drawing, textiles, wood and well… anything to create 2D and 3D art projects was the goal.

Over the years it has become increasingly apparent that tangible benefits result from students having an opportunity to focus on art and creativity with like-minded peers for an extended period of time. Many of the students recommend that the program be longer!

While each student grows from the positive experience of developing their artistic abilities in a focused, encouraging workshop environment and having their artwork taken seriously and shared with their communities, so too do the communities who host the exhibitions benefit.  It is not often that one gets to see a collection of work by youth.  It is inspiring to be around these talented youth while they are learning and making art.  The energy, beauty, intelligence and honesty that went into their work become apparent in this exhibition, which speaks volumes about the caliber of both the students and instructors involved.
