Make an Animated GIF with Aritst-in-Residence Chantal Rousseau!
Experience the magic of making your art come alive! This workshop will introduce the basic animation principals of movement, looping, framing, and timing as well as strategies for making animation cells. Using free online software, you will learn how to make an animated GIF from drawings or photographs – digital or analogue.
The first section of the workshop will showcase artists and illustrators using animated GIFs in their practice. It will cover animation principals, and feature a demonstration of the software. You will then have time to sketch ideas and create a storyboard for your GIF. Pens and paper will be provided, and if you have reference photos or other specific materials you would like to use, you are welcome to bring them in. If you have a laptop, you are also welcome to bring it in to experiment with the animation program, but it isn’t necessary for this session.
Participants then have a week and a half to make a GIF on their own time. The second session will be a presentation of everyone’s GIFs and a chance to share experiences.
Participants will need a computer or smartphone, internet access, and the ability to photograph or scan images. Imaging software such as Photoshop is helpful, but not required – links to free imaging programs will be provided. Some computers and scanner may be available at KIAC for the workshop. This workshop is geared to ages 12 up, and all levels of artistic experience.

Instructor:
Chantal Rousseau is KIAC’s current artist in resident. She is a queer settler artist. Her practice is informed by a bioregional focus, using both embodied experience and research to learn about specific ecosystems. She is curious about points of connection between humans and non-humans, species diversity, and exploring a personal relationship to the land. She has been practicing for over 25 years, primarily focused on painting and animation/animated GIFs.
