In this full-day workshop, we learn the basics of natural dyeing on textiles. This course will cover how to “scour” fabrics (a technical term!), what mordant and fibers to use, how much plant material to gather for a successful dye bath, and safe handling of dyes. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have an introductory understanding of the process and should feel comfortable experimenting on their own. In addition, participants will come away with a variety of samples to take home for future reference.
This course will focus specifically on plant dyes found in the kitchen and will include dyes such as: pomegranate, avocado, red wine, tea and purple cabbage.
It is suggested participants bring:
- notebook and pen
- clothes that can get dirty, though aprons are provided.
- any white cotton, linen, silk or wool to experiment with (could be clothing or scraps). Miriam will have fabrics available for each participant, but who doesn’t like to experiment!?
Miriam Behman is a photographer and textiles artist based in Dawson. She is a founding member of Jimmy’s Place Artist Collective. Miriam recently participated in the Make Something Residency presented by Something Shows, during which she spent much of her time experimenting with natural dyes foraged from gardens and trails in and around Dawson. In this workshop, she will share some of what she learnt during her time in the residency.
