The N&M is a yearly thematic project organized by KIAC’s ODD Gallery and the Artist in Residence Program. Through a rich program of exhibitions, lectures, essays and actions, The Natural & The Manufactured 2009 endeavours to engage both artists and audiences in a re-examination of the cultural, physical and economic values imposed on the environment.

This year we are pleased to announce an expanded program featuring two installations, a public lecture and community art action. All will be launched during the Riverside Arts Festival.

 Stephen Kelly (Halifax): ODD Gallery

During his four weeks in residence, Kelly has produced an installation that is part kinetic sculpture, part sonic environment. Using the internet to access data from sea buoys operated by Oceans Canada, this installation turns actual, real-time oceanic wave patterns into movement and sound within the gallery walls.

Brandon Vickerd (Toronto): Park by the dike, Princess St. and Front St.

In eight weeks at the Macaulay House residence, Vickerd has constructed Northern Satellite, a full-scale replica of a GPS satellite made entirely from birch wood.

Jeanne Randolph (Winnipeg): Public lecture

Dr. Randolph, a practicing psychoanalyst and cultural theorist presents a slide show and lecture that puts our sometimes stale culture/nature dichotomy on the therapist’s couch to help it work through some issues.

Harrell Fletcher (Portland, OR): Public walking tour

Fletcher, an internationally acclaimed interdisciplinary artist, will lead his “Lecture Hike” around Dawson City. This participatory project will enact a direct engagement with the land, and will encourage participants to stop at various points on the walk to present a piece of personal knowledge. While the walk will feature some invited guests, all members of the public are encourage to either walk along or participate in this walking tour like no other.
