DAVID DIVINEY | BETTER THINGS
June 21 – August 4, 2007
Opening Thursday, June 21, 2007 | Artist talk 7pm | Reception 8pm
The sculptures and photographs included in the exhibition Better Things are just a small sample of the work that I’ve produced during the past five years or so. As well, it’s the first time that I’ve shown this particular selection of work together in the same setting. Though the materials, techniques and ideas vary from one object to the next, an interest in the rural and the representation thereof in popular culture and academic discourse provides common ground. Within this, my recent investigations look to a decidedly pastoral vernacular of folk art/lore, backwoods constructs and foundational myths in drawing connections to my own autobiography, having been raised in the foothills of Appalachia, and between the structures of our cultural allegories and the material language of sculpture.
