Co-Artistic Directors Genevieve Doyon and Jessica Hickman have created many original plays including the verbatim piece Busted Up: A Yukon Story and a mask and puppetry show called Radio Silence which have both toured the country. Open Pit Theatre is currently gearing up for their first international tour to Osaka\, Japan in August 2025. \nLOOK UP \nLook Up is a series of intimate short performances which combines live visual animation\, storytelling and live foley soundscape. Look Up aspires to bring everyone back to the simple magic of storytelling. Everything you will see is analog and happening right then and there. To mark this milestone\, KIAC and DCMF have teamed up for a concert series that brings back some of the most beloved participants from the past two decades. \nThe second show in the series features a full-band performance by Khari Wendell McClelland from Vancouver (BC). Khari was DCMF’s 10th Songwriter-in-Residence in 2015. He made a lasting impression on the Dawson community\, organizing a choir that continued to perform together long after his residency. \nWe are excited to welcome Khari back to Dawson City for a weeklong mini-residency. Stay tuned for more details on how you can get involved beyond his performance on February 15th. \nABOUT KHARI WENDELL MCCLELLAND \nOriginally from Detroit\, Khari Wendell McClelland has become a darling on the Canadian music scene\, with critics praising his performances as a clever mix of soul and gospel. Khari’s songwriting crosses genres and generations\, joyfully invoking the spirit of his ancestors who straddled the US-Canadian border in efforts to escape slavery and discrimination. His music draws from this rich history\, integrating the rhythms and folklore of early African-Americans with contemporary sounds and stories of struggle. Recently\, Khari received critical acclaim for his Freedom Singer project\, recreating the music fugitive slaves carried on their journey north into Canada. Khari also performs with the Roots Gospel group The Sojourners. DESCRIPTION:JUAN ORTIZ-APUY  |  TROPICANA February 13 – April 12\, 2025 ODD Gallery\, Dënäkär Zho |  KIAC Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \n\n\n\nOPENING RECEPTION & ARTIST TALK: Thursday\, February 13th at 7PM – 10PM\, Artist talk at 7:30PM – 8:30PM \n\n\n\nTROPICANA\n\n\n\nA GENUINE FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF OBJECTS\, THE YOUTH EXHIBITION TROPICANA SEEKS TO EXAMINE THE WAY WE CONSUME TODAY THE BETTER TO UNDERSTAND ITS FUTURE IMPACTS. \n\n\n\nWhen confronting the environmental crisis\, in which unbridled production of goods is threatening the diversity of the natural world\, it’s essential that we take an interest in how things are displayed\, commercialized and consumed\, whether in brick-and-mortar store windows or online. This youth exhibition\, specially designed for kids and teenagers aged 6 to 14\, casts a critical eye on modern consumer society and advertising aimed at children\, which often features animals\, colours\, sounds and shapes designed to appeal to them. For the occasion\, Montreal-based Costa Rican artist Juan Ortiz-Apuy has created a visual and sound environment allowing visitors to explore the language of advertising and its ability to act on us\, in sometimes unexpected ways. The artist based his research on new marketing strategies that have emerged in the social media era\, i.e.\, the phenomenon of “unboxing” and ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) videos. Besides a guided tour\, children can take part in a workshop designed to awaken their senses\, creativity and critical thinking. Observation games to be completed with family members round out the experience. \n\n\n\nJuan Ortiz-Apuy\n\n\n\nCosta Rica–born Juan Ortiz-Apuy has lived and worked in Montreal since 2003. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University. Working in his favoured techniques of collage and assemblage\, he makes art driven by thinking around consumer goods\, often employing humour to explore the advertising and media strategies associated with them. His works—which he presents in the form of multimedia installations—draw inspiration from design\, art history and pop culture. His work has been shown in several museums and art centres across Canada as well as abroad\, including the Fondation Phi pour l’art contemporain (Montreal)\, Birch Contemporary Gallery (Toronto)\, OPTICA\, centre d’art contemporain (Montréal)\, ARTSPACE (Peterborough)\, the Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa)\, the IKEA Museum (Älmhult\, Sweden)\, as well as at MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image in Montreal and Manif d’art 7 in Quebec City. In 2011 he was the beneficiary of the Halifax Regional Municipality Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program. Upcoming projects include a solo show at Open Space (Victoria)\, and residencies at MASS MoCA (North Adams\, MA\, USA) and the Zentrum Für Keramik (Berlin). Featuring some of Whitehorse’s finest musicians\, Muster Point plays original music that blends and extends genres into sweeping journeys of groove. \n\n\nThe band grew out of a shared dream that live music is so much more than what can be rehearsed. Muster Point’s founding members bonded through Whitehorse’s professional breakdance scene; creating fully improvised music while reacting in realtime to the freestyle dance in front of them. These sacred hip-hop rituals tuned their minds to a different frequency and set the creative tone for Muster Point. Today\, the collective has grown to about ten artists\, with a core group of five that perform regularly. Megan will read from her essay “Learning to Love the Fallow Periods\,” published in the anthology Bad Artist: Creating in a Productivity-Obsessed World and Emelia will read from her celebrated memoir Skid Dogs. \n* \nBios: \nEmelia Symington-Fedy grew up in Armstrong\, BC. She has worked as an essayist\, storyteller and documentary producer for CBC Radio and is the co-artistic director of The Chop Theatre. She is the creator of the popular blog and radio show that became an audiobook\, Trying to Be Good: The Healing Powers of Lying\, Cheating\, Stealing\, and Drugs (Author’s Republic\, 2017). After living an urban life for many years\, Symington-Fedy and her family are now enjoying life back in Armstrong\, on their rural property near a lake. \n— \nMegan is an artist of too many projects. She’s an amateur drummer\, dabbler in alternative photography\, fibre artist\, and writer. On the page\, her work follows her curiosity and the characters that emerge out of nowhere. While she often gravitates towards writing nonfiction Megan’s learning to follow a story where it takes her. Megan believes she has one of the best jobs as the director of programming and communications for the BC and Yukon Book Prizes. Her role includes hosting and producing a weekly podcast\, and she’s interviewed authors such as Billy-Ray Belcourt\, Michelle Good\, Joel Bakan\, and more. She’s also hosted events for the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts and the Federation of BC Writers. DESCRIPTION:Pegged as Canada’s breakout alt-diva\, Begonia has built a legion of fans online and at her legendary live shows. Her critically acclaimed discography includes Lady In Mind EP (2017)\, Fear (2019) and Powder Blue (2023). Among her accolades\, she has two JUNO nominations (2021\, 2024\, Adult Alternative Album of the Year)\, two Polaris Prize nominations\, multiple #1 songs on CBC Radio\, and was named one of NPR’s Artists You Need to Know. \nHer sophomore album\, Powder Blue emerged in early 2023 and confronts themes of sexuality\, self discovery\, acceptance and empowerment. The album was named one of CBC Music’s Best Canadian Albums of 2023 (#7) and was shortlisted for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize. Begonia’s live performance is world class.
