SUMMARY:ARTIST TALK - Beyond the Algorithm: Art\, Ethics\, and AI with Cat Bluemke
DESCRIPTION:How can artists harness artificial intelligence as a meaningful tool rather than a threat? Join artist and educator Cat Bluemke for an engaging talk exploring her evolving practice at the intersection of emerging technologies\, game design\, and critical art-making. Drawing from years of boundary-pushing work\, Bluemke will share her journey and speak directly to the promises and perils of AI in creative spaces. \nThrough personal insight and practical examples\, this talk explores how AI can support artistic autonomy\, community engagement\, and collective authorship—without erasing the ethics of intellectual labor. Aimed at artists\, technologists\, and skeptics alike\, the conversation will also address pressing concerns around copyright\, consent\, and the commercialization of generative tools. \nThe session includes a 30-minute presentation of Bluemke’s work\, a 15-minute reflection on AI as a creative medium\, and a 20-30-minute open Q&A where attendees are encouraged to ask hard questions and challenge assumptions.

SUMMARY:Community Screening: Mammoth Hunters
DESCRIPTION:A sneak peak at\nMammoth Hunters\n2025\, Yukon\nFritz Mueller\, Teresa Earle \nIn the summer of 2022\, a miner struck more than gold in Canada’s Yukon. A fully preserved infant woolly mammoth that died 36\,000 years ago protruded from the Arctic permafrost\, her flesh still pink and green grass in her belly. Mammoth Hunters is a feature documentary that takes us on a journey back through time as we join five mammoth lovers –– scientists\, artists and citizen detectives –– to solve the riddle of these ancient and charismatic animals. Like a puzzle itself\, the film blends ecology\, history\, spirituality and the mystery that is deep time to reveal the bonds that link humanity to these Ice Age giants. \nFilmmakers Fritz Mueller  & Teresa Earle and subjects from the film in attendance for a Q&A. \n$10 in advance or at the door \n(Cash Concessions) \n

SUMMARY:Sarah MacDougall Live Concert at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Doors – 7:30 / Music – 8:00\nAdmission by donation at the door \nMultiple Award winning singer/songwriter Sarah MacDougall is known for her poetic songs and passionate performances. Sarah mixes folk\, pop\, and rock elements into her infectious\, often epic songs. Born in Sweden\, now based in Canada\, Swedish magazine Nöjesguiden declared her: “one of Sweden’s best singer/songwriters’ and Rootstime Belgium described her as ‘One of the greatest talents of our era”.\n\nSarah has played festivals such as Iceland Airwaves\, Edmonton Folk Festival\, Reeperbahn\, and has shared the stage with artists such as Bruce Cockburn\, Tallest Man on Earth\, Buffy St. Marie\, Passenger\, and more. \nHer most recent release\, ‘All The Hours I Have Left To Tell You Anything’ is a record about strength\, identity\, death\, the breakdown of relationships\, birth\, and the ghosts we honor and carry throughout. It is Sarah’s fourth record. It was written in the midst of the death of her grandparents\, the birth of her niece\, and a break up. The nine songs are also influenced by the places that made her and changed her: the dark beauty of Scandinavia the vastness of the Canadian North .\nSarah is working on a new album\, set to be released 2024/2025. \n— \nOpening up is Bird Feet: \nBird Feet is an evolving experimental sound project by Kim Edgar. Using looper pedals\, synths\, and other weird effects\, they create hypnotic and ritualistic live loops and then sing weird songs overtop! They released their first full length album\, Mercury\, in spring of 2024 \n— \nThanks to our funders: Yukon Government\, Government of Canada\, Canada Council for the Arts \nSpecial thanks to the Dawson City Music Festival Association for bringing Sarah up to participate in their Goldensides Studio programming.

SUMMARY:Film Workshop: Cameraless filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:SCRATCH IT OUT! \nA great opportunity for participants to make their own 35mm animated or experimental film without a camera and without processing film. Animators like Norman McLaren and Len Lye explored the technique of direct cinema in the 1930s and almost 90 years later\, it still continuously surprises audiences. \nThe workshop will explore the multiple techniques of cameraless filmmaking and discover new ones along the way. Over the course of the week\, participants will be introduced to materials and tools that can be applied effectively through scratching\, painting and collage – directly on to the surface of motion picture film. We will also learn efficient methods of digitizing the work as moving image files using DIY scanning methods and re-purposing existing applications. \nAs the week progresses\, we take our ideas further\, shaping our projects with digital sound and music. And finally\, we will give our project life\, discovering new ways to implement finished films with popular digital editing and projection software. \nThe final workshop film will be shown at Sunday evening’s 8pm screening. \nThis workshop will take place in 3 parts\, allowing participants to work extensively on their pieces of film with the mentor available for questions and advice. \nIn the KIAC CLassroom \nTuesday\, April 15\, 6-9pm \nWednesday\, April 16\, 6-9pm \nFriday\, April 18\, Noon-3pm \nParticipants can come to one\, 2 or all 3 sessions. \nThe workshop is free. Please register at filmfest@kiac.ca or 993-5005 \nSteven Woloshen was born in Laval\, Canada in 1960. For more than 30 years\, he has passionately created over 50 award-winning\, abstract films and time-based installations for festivals\, galleries and museums. Twice nominated for Canada’s Governor General’s award\, he has received numerous research and creation grants and\, most recently\, was awarded the 2016 René Jodoin lifetime achievement award\, 2015 Wiesbaden Lifetime Achievement Award. Woloshen is a teacher\, film conservationist\, animator\, craftsman and the author of two books\, Recipes for Reconstruction: The Cookbook for the Frugal Filmmaker (2010)\, a hands-on manual for decay\, renewal and other handmade\, analogue film techniques\, and Scratch\, Crackle & Pop! This time she is bringing with her one of the finest rock bands in the Country. The perfect way to complete this 20th Anniversary celebration! \nABOUT SKYE WALLACE \nWith a voice that soars and captivates\, Skye Wallace has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most compelling artists. Their blend of folk\, rock\, and alternative influences\, along with their ability to craft emotive and impactful lyrics\, has won critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. The Act of Living marks Wallace’s latest artistic evolution\, offering an exploration of life’s most profound experiences\, with songs that are both cathartic and reflective. Produced alongside Hawksley Workman and released on Tiny Kingdom\, The Act of Living finds Skye fully embracing the grungy\, unbridled enthusiasm of their live performances\, as they invite listeners on a journey of near-death experiences\, dream worlds\, loss\, and rebirth. \nThanks to our funders and partners:\nCanada Council for the Arts | Government of Canada | Yukon Government | Park Canada | North Klondyke Highway Music Society

SUMMARY:Khari Wendell McClelland Celebrating 20 Years of DCMF’s Songwriter-in-Residence Program
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 15\, 2025\nDënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom\nDoors at 7:30 PM\, Music at 8:00 PM \nTo buy tickets\, click here! \nIn 2025\, the Dawson City Music Festival (DCMF) will celebrate 20 years of its Songwriter-in-Residence program. To mark this milestone\, KIAC and DCMF have teamed up for a concert series that brings back some of the most beloved participants from the past two decades. \nThe second show in the series features a full-band performance by Khari Wendell McClelland from Vancouver (BC). Khari was DCMF’s 10th Songwriter-in-Residence in 2015. He made a lasting impression on the Dawson community\, organizing a choir that continued to perform together long after his residency. \nWe are excited to welcome Khari back to Dawson City for a weeklong mini-residency. Stay tuned for more details on how you can get involved beyond his performance on February 15th. \nABOUT KHARI WENDELL MCCLELLAND \nOriginally from Detroit\, Khari Wendell McClelland has become a darling on the Canadian music scene\, with critics praising his performances as a clever mix of soul and gospel. Khari’s songwriting crosses genres and generations\, joyfully invoking the spirit of his ancestors who straddled the US-Canadian border in efforts to escape slavery and discrimination. His music draws from this rich history\, integrating the rhythms and folklore of early African-Americans with contemporary sounds and stories of struggle. Recently\, Khari received critical acclaim for his Freedom Singer project\, recreating the music fugitive slaves carried on their journey north into Canada. Khari also performs with the Roots Gospel group The Sojourners. Whether on stage or in the studio\, Khari’s passion for community\, equality and justice is palpable\, as is his belief in the redemptive power of music. \nThanks to our funders and partners:\nCanada Council for the Arts | Government of Canada | Yukon Government | Park Canada | North Klondyke Highway Music Society

This youth exhibition\, specially designed for kids and teenagers aged 6 to 14\, casts a critical eye on modern consumer society and advertising aimed at children\, which often features animals\, colours\, sounds and shapes designed to appeal to them. For the occasion\, Montreal-based Costa Rican artist Juan Ortiz-Apuy has created a visual and sound environment allowing visitors to explore the language of advertising and its ability to act on us\, in sometimes unexpected ways. The artist based his research on new marketing strategies that have emerged in the social media era\, i.e.\, the phenomenon of “unboxing” and ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) videos. Besides a guided tour\, children can take part in a workshop designed to awaken their senses\, creativity and critical thinking. Observation games to be completed with family members round out the experience. \n\n\n\nJuan Ortiz-Apuy\n\n\n\nCosta Rica–born Juan Ortiz-Apuy has lived and worked in Montreal since 2003. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University. Working in his favoured techniques of collage and assemblage\, he makes art driven by thinking around consumer goods\, often employing humour to explore the advertising and media strategies associated with them. His works—which he presents in the form of multimedia installations—draw inspiration from design\, art history and pop culture. His work has been shown in several museums and art centres across Canada as well as abroad\, including the Fondation Phi pour l’art contemporain (Montreal)\, Birch Contemporary Gallery (Toronto)\, OPTICA\, centre d’art contemporain (Montréal)\, ARTSPACE (Peterborough)\, the Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa)\, the IKEA Museum (Älmhult\, Sweden)\, as well as at MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image in Montreal and Manif d’art 7 in Quebec City. In 2011 he was the beneficiary of the Halifax Regional Municipality Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program. Upcoming projects include a solo show at Open Space (Victoria)\, and residencies at MASS MoCA (North Adams\, MA\, USA) and the Zentrum Für Keramik (Berlin). Juan Ortiz-Apuy holds a BFA from Concordia University\, where he now teaches\, along with a postgraduate diploma from the Glasgow School of Art and an MFA from NSCAD University. \n\n\n\n\n\nCrédit pour la tournée de Juan : \n\n\n\nLa circulation de Tropicana bénéficie du soutien financier du Conseil des arts du Canada et du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Universal Language
DESCRIPTION:Universal Language \nDir. Matthew Rankin\n2024\, Canada\, 89 min\nEnglish\, Farsi and French with English subtitles \nCanada’s nomination for Best Foreign Language Feature Oscar®. \nIn a mysterious and surreal interzone somewhere between Tehran and Winnipeg\, the lives of multiple characters interweave with each other in surprising and mysterious ways. Gradeschoolers Negin and Nazgol find a sum of money frozen in the winter ice and try to claim it. Meanwhile\, Massoud leads a group of increasingly-befuddled tourists through the monuments and historic sites of Winnipeg. Matthew quits his meaningless job in a Québecois government office and sets out upon an enigmatic journey to visit his mother. Space\, time and personal identities crossfade\, interweave and echo into a surreal comedy of disorientation. \nDirector Matthew Rankin and writer Ila Firouzabadi in attendance. \nWith gracious help from Air North: Yukon’s Airline and NVD Hotels (Eldorado)! \nAdmission by Donation.
