DESCRIPTION:This April\, Gwaandak Theatre and Klondike Institute of Art and Culture are excited to be presenting two in-person events in Dawson City as part of the 2026 Awaken Festival! \n\nJoin us for Trickster Performance on Wednesday April 15th – a workshop facilitated by Philip Jonah Logan Geller – alongside a one-night only presentation of their performance showcase “who will save the night sky?” on Friday April 17th.\n—\nBoth the workshop and the performance will be taking place at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom.\nAdmissions to these events is Pay-What-You-Want and pre-registration / tickets will be available at KIAC.CA / KIAC Office / At the Door prior to each event when doors open.\n—\n\nTrickster Performance (Workshop)By Philip Jonah Logan GellerWednesday\, April 15th – 6PM-8PM (Doors @ 5:30PM)Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom \n\nJoin experienced creator and performer Philip Jonah Logan Geller to explore trickster methodologies of performance and creation. Drawing from contemporary clown\, physical theatre\, Indigenous knowledges\, and Land-based practices we will uncover our tricksters to play and generate material for performance.\n\nAs we stand at the very serious edge of the end of the world I truly believe Trickster is a key to how we can move and play forward in right relation with each other. Trickster is the one who teaches us about subversion and challenging power. Trickster tells us to celebrate the other\, the strange\, and the queer. Trickster offers a new-ancient knowledge system that is ancestral and future oriented. \n\nIn this workshop we will move our bodies and play\, and we will explore ancestral and generational narratives that can stir up emotional responses\, everyone is welcome to participate in whatever way feels best for them. Please come ready to experiment and play! There will be some movement and writing\, all abilities are welcome. Please be aware that smudging will take place prior to this workshop. All are welcome to participate but none are required.\n\nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema Night: The Gleaners and I - March 19th
DESCRIPTION:The Gleaners and I (2000)\nDir. Agnes Varda\nFrance | 2000 | 1h 22m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \nThis March 19th\, join KIAC Classic Films for a screening of The Gleaners and I on the big screen at Dënäkär Zho/KIAC Ballroom. In this ode to counter-culture\, the legendary French director\, Agnes Varda discovers digital cameras and turns them on the fringes of society and those who choose alternatives to mainstream life – including herself. Her colourful cast of ‘gleaners’ – people who gather leftover crops after a harvest – exist on the edge of the fields and cities. They collect everything from food to urban waste for necessity\, for art\, and for resistance. Varda travels across France collecting/gleaning all of her interactions with the people she meets and weaving them into unexpected and touching narratives. \nThe Gleaners and I was an international hit\, resonating with and inspiring people from all parts of society and bringing Varda back into the deserved spotlight. In this documentary of scavengers\, foragers\, dumpster-divers\, thrifters\, anti-consumerists\, and artists\, Varda demonstrates all of the curiosity\, empathy\, and joy her work is known for. Ce qui est dechet pour l’un est tresor pour l’autre.

SUMMARY:Amour Courtois: Medieval Meets Jazz at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Amour Courtois: Medieval Meets Jazz\nMatthew Baker\, barytone; Efrén López\, multi-instrumentalist; Baptiste Bailly\, piano & arrangements\nCo-presented with Whitehorse Concerts\n—\nWed\, March 4\ndoors at 7\, Pre-show chat at 7:30\, concert to follow\nPay-what-you-want – kiacyukon.square.site \n– \nRuntime: Approximately 100 min \nAmour Courtois is a bold and evocative musical project led by French jazz pianist Baptiste Bailly\, reimagining 14th-century French songs through the lens of contemporary improvisation. Inspired by the enduring emotional resonance of medieval melodies\, Bailly collaborates with Matthew Baker on the baryton and Efren López on the hurdy-gurdy and ouds\, crafting an anachronistic yet striking soundscape. Their repertoire – featuring works by Machaut\, Binchois\, and Lescurel – bridges centuries and highlights the timelessness of human expression. \nAmour Courtois treats medieval songs not as static artifacts but as living works. While the original melodies are respected as closely as possible\, with the aim of preserving their essence\, the musicians change the settings\, time signatures\, chords\, context\, and costumes. Improvised or newly written passages are integrated into the pieces\, like moments of intimate expression nourished by the eclecticism of their personalities and influences\, revealing a touching and spontaneous musical craftsmanship\, boundless and timeless. \n– \nThanks to our funders – Government of Canada\, Yukon Government\, Canada Council for the Arts\nand special thanks to Northern Vision Development / the Downtown Hotel

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema Night: I Know Where I'm Going - March 2nd
DESCRIPTION:I know where I’m going (1945)\nDir. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger\nEngland | 1945 | 1h 32m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \nThis March 2nd\, join KIAC Classic Films for a screening of I Know Where I’m Going! on the big screen at Dënäkär Zho/KIAC Ballroom. This late entry to the canon of Scottish Romanticism is sure to delight both Hallmark movie acolytes and critics alike. The legendary writer/director/producer duo\, Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell also known as “the Archers” serve up their distinctive style. \nTake a trip to the stormy Scottish Hebrides to meet your fiance – the wealthiest man in Britain! Miss your ferry and get stranded with a random dashing falconer. Rail against the rain. The fog. The wind. The gales. Search for a golden eagle. Check out a ceilidh. Lie to yourself. Lie to the falconer. Ignore everything the locals tell you. Endanger people’s lives in an enormous whirlpool. Then\, live happily ever after? Gorgeous\, moody cinematography and a stubborn (perhaps unlikeable) heroine make this one of Powell and Pressburger’s best-loved films.

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema Night: Ariel
DESCRIPTION:Ariel (1987)\nDir. Aki Kaurismäki\nFinland | 1987 | 1h 12m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \nThis February 21st\, KIAC Classic Films presents Aki Kaurismäki’s Ariel on the big screen at Dënäkär Zho/KIAC Ballroom. With over a dozen films to his name\, Kaurismäki claimed this to be his best work. His sardonic and deadpan treatment of working-class folks doing working-class things\, and going to working-class places never patronizes; instead\, it rolls along like a 1962 Cadillac convertible with the top down. Keep your eyes on the road because this hilarious comedy never announces a joke!   \nIt’s Lapland\, Finland in the 80s and times are tough at the coal mine. Taisto’s Dad has had enough and leaves him with a classic car and some important advice: get out of this dead end town\, now. What follows is Taisto’s matter of fact meander through the trials and tribulations of getting by in gritty Helsinki. Taisto finds tragedy\, love\, friendship\, betrayal. The world is cold and uncaring\, but don’t worry! Taisto doesn’t!

SUMMARY:An Evening with Destroyer at Dënäkär Zho / Klondike Institute of Art & Culture
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Destroyer\nFri\, Feb 13 at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom\nCo-presented with the Dawson City Music Festival\n\n\n\n\ndoors open at 7:30 / music at 8:00\nTickets on sale here \n\nOpening set by Cryptozoologists (solo)\nSince 2016\, Cryptozoologists have been creating scrappy art rock in Whitehorse\, Yukon\, with acclaim and without it. Backwater Station\, their new album\, is the band at their most honed and confident\, a culmination of a decade of irreverent and angst-fueled songwriting in Whitehorse’s fast-changing social landscape. As contrast to the romanticization of Whitehorse as the unblemished\, so-called “wilderness city\,” the album’s nine songs centre elements of the left-behind\, the unremarkable\, and the undesired of the gentrifying urban public sphere – the city’s undeveloped gravel lots\, its puke averted on the sidewalk\, and the route of its human waste to the municipal sewage lagoon. \n\n— \nWhat is a “boogie”? In the common tongue\, it’s a dance or an occasion to dance\, a song or a shindig\, an incitement to move\, quickly\, whether it’s on the floor or out of town\, getting down or lying low. This being a Destroyer album and not the common tongue\, the implications of a title like Dan’s Boogie are at once more alluring and dangerous. “A boogie is a hustle\, a scam that doesn’t quite work\, the moves we make when we’re up against it\,” explains Dan Bejar. “I think of spy work\, double agents\, sleeping with one eye open\, an eye on the exits. But I also think of petty street-level victories and losses and improv.” \nDan’s Boogie is a breakthrough album for Destroyer\, both in the sense that it makes moves that no Destroyer album to this point has made\, and in the sense that\, to record it\, Bejar had to burst through a series of intentional and unintentional barriers to write the songs. Initially challenging himself to not write songs so the ideas would well up inside of him until they breached containment\, the months following the completion of LABYRINTHITIS turned into one year then two\, at which point Bejar gave himself a New Year’s resolution to play the piano every day for an hour. That lasted about four days\, but the songs Bejar credits as coming from that resolution—“Cataract Time\,” “Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World\,” “Bologna\,” and “Dan’s Boogie” among them—are all-timer Destroyer songs across the vast spectrum Bejar and his collaborators have established for themselves: spectacle-laden pop epics\, personal piano ballads\, and smouldering works of mood that blur the lines between song and novel and cinema\, each brimming with the urgency of a state secret in the mind of a tortured spy. \nLead single “Bologna” is the most radical frame for this energy\, as it’s the first time Bejar wrote a song where he imagined himself as a supporting character. Taking lead is Fiver’s Simone Schmidt\, whose voice—tough and expressive\, piercing through the murk of the scene—is a siren’s call that haunts the album. The gravity of their voice pulls Dan’s Boogie into order around a sense of impending doom\, the way a fatale’s promise of the unusual and the ecstatic dooms the principal character of an erotic thriller. \n“Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World” is a delicious bit of contradiction\, a peppy song that came out of the havoc Bejar was intentionally wreaking on himself—its holiday cheeriness making the angst of its lyrics go down smoothly until the song veers off the road. “We are now entering a new phase\,” Bejar intones\, introducing layers of guitar and synthesizer that considerably darken the palette as he alternates between singing and speaking. The lyrics and vocals are improvised\, invented as Bejar recorded the demo in his garage—a manic stream-of-consciousness and simultaneously exquisite display of his songwriting mastery. \nContradiction informs much of Dan’s Boogie\, the fog swirling around Bejar illuminated by the friction between competing truths and tastes\, as when his interest in jazzy ballads runs aground on producer and bassist John Collins’ interest in bands like Led Zeppelin and Scritti Politti. When Bejar told Collins that he was thinking of Sammy Davis Jr.\, the title track bloomed into being\, Bejar adopting a Rat Pack swagger with almost delusional glee against a dreamy soundscape of soaring guitars\, lush horns\, jazz drumming\, spaced-out synths\, and\, perhaps truest to how Bejar sees himself\, plinking lounge piano. \nIn terms of shaping sound\, the centerpiece of Dan’s Boogie may be “Cataract Time\,” an eight-minute epic that ranks as some of the heaviest lyrics Bejar has ever written\, and one of Destroyer’s most musically intricate compositions. Borne aloft on an easygoing groove\, Bejar’s lyrics—“a reckoning\, a dressing down” as he describes them—are transfigured\, their melancholy tasting almost counterintuitively like hope. It’s an intimate song that puts away Destroyer’s usual urban fable milieu in exchange for bracing interiority\, but its lilting groove can see a future\, one that Bejar and his band are eager to meet. \nIt is\, to use Bejar’s phrase\, the kind of song you make when you’re up against it\, when it seems as if the world is crashing down upon you. And therein lies the album’s most radical shift: Where previous Destroyer albums were locked in combat with the world\, Dan’s Boogie dances with it\, its nine reveries coalescing into one long hustle. Dan Bejar’s eye may be on the exits\, but he’s not leaving anytime soon. \n— \nFunded by Canada Council for the Arts\, Government of Canada\, and Yukon Government

SUMMARY:Naomi Kavka (DCMF Songwriter-in-residence) Live Concert
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7:30pm // Show at 8:00pm\nTickets by donation at the door. All proceeds support the DCMF Songwriter-in-Residence program!\n\n—-\n\nNaomi Kavka is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Smithers\, BC. A classically trained cellist\, vocalist\, and guitar player\, Kavka brings a myriad of influences to her songs\, forming a daring indie-rock sound that is musically polished\, lyrically visceral\, and emotionally raw. Her songs come from the unique perspective of a queer woman\, a child of a refugee\, a resident of the precipice of the wilderness of Canada. \nKavka’s band\, Geoff McFarlane (Handsome Eli) Ian Olmstead (Alex Cuba)\, Justin Gendreau (Pitted)\, and Jordy Walker\, deftly support her as they perform deeply intimate\, political\, and cathartic songs. Brought together by soundscapes and comradery\, they blend their backgrounds of jazz\, classical music\, folk traditions\, and rock to communicate complex emotional landscapes. Their latest album “Then and Now” (June 2024) is a collection of 8 songs produced by Jordy Walker. Ranging from driving indie jams\, melancholic ballads\, snarky anthems\, and art rock improvisations\, “Then and Now” demonstrates Kavka’s fearlessness and range as a performer and songwriter.

KIAC Classic Films presents Jules Dassin’s Rififi/Du Rififi Chez les Hommes (1955) in all its gritty tense hard-boiled pulp glory. An acclaimed director\, Jules Dassin had a long career in Hollywood in the 1940s until he was accused of being a communist and blacklisted. The film depicts Tony “Le Stephanois” who is just out of prison in Paris when his Italian pal Mario tells him about a foolproof score he’s got lined up. After seeing his old girlfriend\, Mado living large with the local gangster\, how could he really say no to some easy money. The scheme becomes more and more elaborate and the stakes get higher and higher until you could cut the tension with a knife. Rififi is famous for its 30-minute silent robbery scene – no dialogue\, no music. ASMR before ASMR! This film screening should not be missed.

In 2025\, she made her role debut as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with Sarasota Opera\, and was later named an International Finalist in the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition. SUMMARY:An Evening with Author / Composer Daniel Janke: Reading & Musical Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join Author / Composer Daniel Janke for a reading from his debut collection of stories “Book of Heroes” on Mosaic Press and a musical performance from his latest song cycle “Map of You”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– \nIn Book of Heroes\, composer\, filmmaker\, and writer Daniel Janke turns his artistic lens to fiction in a witty and deeply reflective debut collection where ordinary lives become the stage for extraordinary acts of grace and resilience. These are stories of travellers and observers. From the serene and starkly beautiful Yukon to a perilous swim on the beach in The Gambia\, and the sharp musings of a homeless philosopher beneath a city bridge\, Book of Heroes charts a world where the everyday clashes with the utterly surreal. Its characters\, caught between the mundane and the fantastic\, are called to act\, sometimes bravely\, sometimes absurdly\, but always with heart. \n– \nMap of You is a new recording release from Canadian composer Daniel Janke\, featuring soprano / pianist Rachel Fenlon. The song cycle was composed in 2023 – 2024\, and recorded in Berlin in early 2025. It is themed on the different types of love\, the existential nature of love\, and explores the question of whether we have truly experienced love in our lives. \n– \nDaniel Janke is a writer\, composer\, and filmmaker based near Whitehorse\, Yukon. Creator of the CBC series Northern Town and the award-winning NFB film How People Got Fire\, he has collaborated with leading Canadian musicians. Book of Heroes is his debut fiction collection\, following decades of multidisciplinary creative work.

SUMMARY:Les Hay Babies – Tintamarre! - Concert à Dënäkär Zho / KIAC
DESCRIPTION:Les Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \n________________________________________________________________________________ \nThe Hay Babies – Tintamarre \nAs part of Coup de Cœur Francophone 2025\, the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\, in partnership with the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY)\, is proud to present The Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \nDescription \nLes Hay Babies are friends first: fun comes before work and work is done while having fun. New Brunswick-born Acadians Julie Aubé\, Katrine Noël and Vivianne Roy have been bringing forth their sparkling\, multifaceted folk-rock for over a decade\, renewing their musical proposition with each new release. Since forming a band in 2011\, they have launched their EP Folio (2012) and the albums* Mon homesick heart* (2014)\, La 4ième dimension (version longue) (2016)\, and Boîte aux lettres (2020)\, shifting from indie-folk and country to classic rock and disco. They reinvent their sound once again with their fourth album\, to come out in 2024: a trademark of theirs as much as their unwavering drive and interest in actualizing sounds from past decades. \n________________________________________________________________________________ \nL’Association franco-yukonnaise remercie ses bailleurs de fonds\, Coup de cœur francophone et leurs partenaires pour leur appui essentiel à la réalisation de cet événement. / The Association franco-yukonnaise thanks its funders\, Coup de cœur francophone\, and their partners for their essential support in making this event possible. \n\nGouvernement du Yukon\nGouvernement du Canada\nLotteries Yukon\nJazz Yukon\nNorthern Vision Développement\nMusicAction\nSiriusXM\nUnisTV\nRadio-Canada\nGouvernement du Québec\nSocan\nAkufen
