This exhibition brings together the work of artists and makers from the Northern Fibres Guild\, an organization that has supported and nurtured Yukon fibre artists since its beginnings in 1974. \nRooted in traditional techniques like spinning\, weaving\, dyeing\, and felting\, and expanding into contemporary interpretations of textile art\, these works speak to the resourcefulness\, creativity\, and quiet resilience of making in the North. Each piece carries a unique story — of material transformed\, of time held in stitch and thread\, of ideas shared in community. \nLike the midnight sun itself\, these works radiate warmth\, clarity\, and a sense of wonder. DESCRIPTION:As part of Weaving the Midnight Sun and the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival\, textile artist Janice Brodie invites the public into the process of community weaving. \nUsing scraps\, old linens\, and fabric donated by Dawson locals and drawn from her own stash\, Janice will spend the day weaving a communal rug on a floor loom in the ODD Gallery. This is a celebration of reuse\, resilience\, and the stories we share through cloth. \nVisitors are welcome to stop in\, ask questions\, contribute material\, or even try weaving a few rows. Their project will focus on the intersection of personal and collective dreams\, using an intuitive\, object-driven process to develop a shared language of symbols\, histories\, and queer vernacular.\nInformed by the landscape of Dawson City and the local history\, the duo will embark on a creative journey that blends the conscious and unconscious—allowing their dreams and waking experiences to intertwine.\nTheir practice will focus on building an embodied “dreamspace\,” where daily rituals\, found objects\, handmade props\, and materials drawn from their shared queer semiology will help manifest a collaborative unconscious landscape. While the exact outcome of their residency remains open-ended\, their aim is to create a space where meaning emerges from irrational imagery\, dreams\, and everyday interactions.\nThe residency will be a deep dive into the ways intimate\, intergenerational queer relationships inform artistic creation\, with an emphasis on mutual care and exchange. Both artists hope that the residency will help refine their collaborative process\, enriching their work and inspiring new ideas that might evolve into future public or private presentations.

DESCRIPTION:You are invited to an open studio of The General Store! \nMacaulay House Artists in Residence Ben Evely and Nahanni McKay invite you to their Open Studio and Artist Talk at Ruby’s Place\, a Parks Canada KNHS building\, right next to KIAC! \n📅When: Friday\, August 29th\, 6 to 8 pm (Artist Talk at 7pm) \n📍Where: Ruby’s Place\, 914 2nd Avenue \nAll welcome\, refreshments served! \nShowcasing a collection of new works and work in progress\, The General Store is a collaborative project by current KIAC artists in residence Nahanni Mckay and Ben Evely. Inspired by growing up in Banff\, Alberta (on Treaty 7 Territory)\, the duo’s work examines the commodification of nature\, and the way places are shaped by tourism and recreation. Many small towns have shops selling a broad variety of goods\, often a general store. The open studio includes artworks that span various mediums and concepts related to their shared experiences. \nThe pair are drawn to the historical impacts of colonialism and the gold rush in Dawson City and current initiatives for reconciliation with First Nations\, and instilling respect for the land. The seasonal tourism economy\, and vibrant art community make Dawson an ideal setting to further expand on their ideas. \nBig thanks to Parks Canada KHNS and The Bunkhouse for supporting this residency project!

DESCRIPTION:Join current KIAC Artist in Residence Margaret Bowes at the Macaulay House on Saturday\, August 23 at 3pm for an afternoon of conversation\, work-in-progress\, and hands-on curiosity. Visitors are invited to explore her studio\, view recent experiments\, and share ideas over snacks and fireweed tea. Margaret’s research focuses on pigments sourced from local minerals and plants shaped by wildfire\, industrial activity\, and mining history. With a background in visual arts and forestry\, she works at the intersection of ecology\, material culture\, and place\, using foraging\, alternative photographic processes\, and printmaking to explore how pigment can hold stories of land and its transformations. All welcome\, refreshments will be served
