SUMMARY:Videodrome:Cult Cinema at the Eldorado
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Sluice Box Lounge at the Eldorado Hotel for a screening of a some Canadian film wierdness. \nVideodrome\nDirector: David Cronenberg\n1983\, 87m \nWhen Max Renn goes looking for edgy new shows for his sleazy cable TV station\, he stumbles across the pirate broadcast of a hyper-violent torture show called Videodrome. As he struggles to unearth the origins of the program\, he embarks on a hallucinatory journey into a shadow world of right-wing conspiracies\, sadomasochistic sex games\, and bodily transformation. Starring James Woods and Deborah Harry in one of her first film roles\, Videodrome is one of writer/director David Cronenberg’s most original and provocative works\, fusing social commentary with shocking elements of sex and violence. With groundbreaking special effects makeup by Academy Award®-winner Rick Baker\, Videodrome has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and mind-bending science fiction films of the 1980s.

SUMMARY:TROPICANA Exhibition - FREE Private Tours!
DESCRIPTION:JUAN ORTIZ-APUY  |  TROPICANA February 13 – April 12\, 2025 ODD Gallery\, Dënäkär Zho |  KIAC Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \n\n\n\n\n\nTROPICANA\n\n\n\nA GENUINE FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF OBJECTS\, THE YOUTH EXHIBITION TROPICANA SEEKS TO EXAMINE THE WAY WE CONSUME TODAY THE BETTER TO UNDERSTAND ITS FUTURE IMPACTS. \n\n\n\nWhen confronting the environmental crisis\, in which unbridled production of goods is threatening the diversity of the natural world\, it’s essential that we take an interest in how things are displayed\, commercialized and consumed\, whether in brick-and-mortar store windows or online. This youth exhibition\, specially designed for kids and teenagers aged 6 to 14\, casts a critical eye on modern consumer society and advertising aimed at children\, which often features animals\, colours\, sounds and shapes designed to appeal to them. For the occasion\, Montreal-based Costa Rican artist Juan Ortiz-Apuy has created a visual and sound environment allowing visitors to explore the language of advertising and its ability to act on us\, in sometimes unexpected ways. The artist based his research on new marketing strategies that have emerged in the social media era\, i.e.\, the phenomenon of “unboxing” and ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) videos. SUMMARY:Juan Ortiz-Apuy | TROPICANA Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:JUAN ORTIZ-APUY  |  TROPICANA February 13 – April 12\, 2025 ODD Gallery\, Dënäkär Zho |  KIAC Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \n\n\n\nOPENING RECEPTION & ARTIST TALK: Thursday\, February 13th at 7PM – 10PM\, Artist talk at 7:30PM – 8:30PM \n\n\n\nTROPICANA\n\n\n\nA GENUINE FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF OBJECTS\, THE YOUTH EXHIBITION TROPICANA SEEKS TO EXAMINE THE WAY WE CONSUME TODAY THE BETTER TO UNDERSTAND ITS FUTURE IMPACTS. Besides a guided tour\, children can take part in a workshop designed to awaken their senses\, creativity and critical thinking. Observation games to be completed with family members round out the experience. \n\n\n\nJuan Ortiz-Apuy\n\n\n\nCosta Rica–born Juan Ortiz-Apuy has lived and worked in Montreal since 2003. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University. Working in his favoured techniques of collage and assemblage\, he makes art driven by thinking around consumer goods\, often employing humour to explore the advertising and media strategies associated with them. His works—which he presents in the form of multimedia installations—draw inspiration from design\, art history and pop culture. His work has been shown in several museums and art centres across Canada as well as abroad\, including the Fondation Phi pour l’art contemporain (Montreal)\, Birch Contemporary Gallery (Toronto)\, OPTICA\, centre d’art contemporain (Montréal)\, ARTSPACE (Peterborough)\, the Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa)\, the IKEA Museum (Älmhult\, Sweden)\, as well as at MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image in Montreal and Manif d’art 7 in Quebec City. In 2011 he was the beneficiary of the Halifax Regional Municipality Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program. Upcoming projects include a solo show at Open Space (Victoria)\, and residencies at MASS MoCA (North Adams\, MA\, USA) and the Zentrum Für Keramik (Berlin). Juan Ortiz-Apuy holds a BFA from Concordia University\, where he now teaches\, along with a postgraduate diploma from the Glasgow School of Art and an MFA from NSCAD University. \n\n\n\n\n\nCrédit pour la tournée de Juan : \n\n\n\nLa circulation de Tropicana bénéficie du soutien financier du Conseil des arts du Canada et du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. SUMMARY:Khari Wendell McClelland Celebrating 20 Years of DCMF’s Songwriter-in-Residence Program
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 15\, 2025\nDënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom\nDoors at 7:30 PM\, Music at 8:00 PM \nTo buy tickets\, click here! \nIn 2025\, the Dawson City Music Festival (DCMF) will celebrate 20 years of its Songwriter-in-Residence program. To mark this milestone\, KIAC and DCMF have teamed up for a concert series that brings back some of the most beloved participants from the past two decades. \nThe second show in the series features a full-band performance by Khari Wendell McClelland from Vancouver (BC). Khari was DCMF’s 10th Songwriter-in-Residence in 2015. He made a lasting impression on the Dawson community\, organizing a choir that continued to perform together long after his residency. \nWe are excited to welcome Khari back to Dawson City for a weeklong mini-residency. Stay tuned for more details on how you can get involved beyond his performance on February 15th. \nABOUT KHARI WENDELL MCCLELLAND \nOriginally from Detroit\, Khari Wendell McClelland has become a darling on the Canadian music scene\, with critics praising his performances as a clever mix of soul and gospel. Khari’s songwriting crosses genres and generations\, joyfully invoking the spirit of his ancestors who straddled the US-Canadian border in efforts to escape slavery and discrimination. His music draws from this rich history\, integrating the rhythms and folklore of early African-Americans with contemporary sounds and stories of struggle. Recently\, Khari received critical acclaim for his Freedom Singer project\, recreating the music fugitive slaves carried on their journey north into Canada. Khari also performs with the Roots Gospel group The Sojourners. Whether on stage or in the studio\, Khari’s passion for community\, equality and justice is palpable\, as is his belief in the redemptive power of music. \nThanks to our funders and partners:\nCanada Council for the Arts | Government of Canada | Yukon Government | Park Canada | North Klondyke Highway Music Society

SUMMARY:Re:Imagine | Re:Create - Reclaimed Public Art Residency OPEN CALL!
DESCRIPTION:Program Description\nThe ODD Gallery\, in collaboration with STEPS (Sustainable Thinking & Expressions in Public Spaces)\, is pleased to present Re:Imagine | Re:Create\, a public art initiative that champions sustainability\, creative reuse\, and community engagement. This program will commission the creation of an original site-specific public artworks utilizing reclaimed materials sourced from various locations across Dawson City\, including the municipal dump\, Thrift Store\, Free Store\, local construction sites\, mis-tint paint from Home Hardware\, and donations from voluntary community members. This initiative seeks to engage an artist with a demonstrated history of working with reclaimed materials\, ensuring the final artworks are not only structurally sound but also conceptually rigorous\, inclusive\, and accessible to a diverse audience. The completed works will be temporarily installed on the Dawson City dike as part of the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival (YRAF) taking place June 12 – 15\, 2025. By activating this prominent public space with thought-provoking and environmentally conscious art\, Re:Imagine | Re:Create aims to highlight the potential of creative sustainability while deepening community connections to both the artistic process and the local landscape. \nThis project is supported by STEPS Public Art\, the TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment and the Canadian Council for the Arts. \nPlease see our Public Art -> OPEN CALL – Re:Imagine | Re:Create page for full details on how and when to apply.\n \nWe’re looking forward to reviewing all potential proposals!\n\nAbout STEPS\n\n\n STEPS Public Art is a Canadian charity and social enterprise. SUMMARY:Susan Schuppli: SOVA Artist-in-Residence Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Susan Schuppli is a researcher and artist based in the UK. She is Professor and Director of the Centre for Research Architecture\, Goldsmiths University of London and is also an investigative researcher with the human rights agency Forensic Architecture recipient of the 2024 Right Livelihood Award. Susan Schuppli’s fieldwork and documentary film practice is situated at the intersections between environmental struggles\, climate science\, and affected communities with a contemporary focus on the cryosphere and the politics of cold. \n\nCreative projects have been exhibited throughout Europe\, Asia\, Canada\, and the US. She has published widely within the context of media and politics and is author of the book\, Material Witness: Media\, Forensics\, Evidence published by MIT Press in 2020.\n\nSupported by Yukon School of Visual Arts\, the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (KIAC)\, YukonU\, with funding support from a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Connections Grant / Toronto Biennial of Art.\n\nOVERVIEW\n\nDr. Susan Schuppli will be working in collaboration with students from SOVA in Nicole’s 4D Studio class on her project SOUNDING ICE: sensing frozen flows. Via sound and various field recording strategies\, the project explores the signals of climate change found in and around the Yukon and Klondike Rivers—their confluences and histories.\n\nThe practice of ‘sounding’ refers both to the taking of depth measurements in a body of water as well as the sourcing of ‘evidence’ needed in a preliminary step towards taking action. This project and forthcoming website will document our collective efforts to ‘sound out’ local expressions and histories of the environment—Earth evidence—and its urgent calls to action.\n\nMy earlier work as an artist-researcher and writer explored material evidence\, specifically the ways in which non-human witnesses\, enter into trials and tribunals to testify to historical events\, in particular those involving political violence\, ethnic conflict\, and war crimes. This work assumed many different modes of communication from legal analysis and public advocacy to theoretical reflection and creative exploration. Current research and artistic production expands these investigations to examine how environmental systems and the transformations brought about by global warming are generating new forms of evidence; creating\, in effect\, a planetary archive of material witnesses.\n\nhttps://susanschuppli.com

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema: Being There
DESCRIPTION:Being There\nDir. Hal Ashby \nUSA | 1979 | 130m \nStarring: Peter Sellers\, Shirley Maclaine \nDo you like to watch? This March 23rd\, come and enjoy the KIAC Classic Films presentation of Being There (1979) starring Peter Sellers\, Shirley Maclaine\, Melvyn Douglas\, and the impressive Biltmore Estate at the KIAC/Dënäkär Zho Ballroom. This Hal Ashby classic retelling of Jerzy Kosinski’s 1970 novel couldn’t be more relevant in the spring of 2025 as it beautifully reveals that we are all so drawn to the vague rhetoric and sculpted image of our screens and that none of us is actually really listening to one another. \nDoors at 6:30\nFree admission (Cash concession)
