SUMMARY:ODD Gallery Exhibition | UPROOTED by Jaimie Robson
DESCRIPTION:JAIMIE ROBSON  |  UPROOTED\nFebruary 6 – March 14\, 2026\nODD Gallery\, Dënäkär Zho |  KIAC\nTr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \nOPENING RECEPTION: Friday\, February 6th at 7PM – 9PM \nUPROOTED\nUprooted is an immersive shadow installation that explores notions of collective loss and grief as they relate to impending climate change. The work grapples with wildfires that are wreaking havoc on the landscape and uprooting small communities. The project begins on the forest floor\, bringing a microscopic lens to the ground beneath our feet. This up-close perspective serves as an entry point for thinking about larger issues of climate anxiety\, uncertainty\, and the notion of solastalgia. \nArtist Statement\nI am an interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal. I use traditional craft-based techniques to create contemporary artworks and installations. The artworks in this exhibition represent my ongoing interest in working with cut paper in relation to elements of light and shadow. Having grown up on BC’s west coast\, the mossy forest floor is the most comforting place I can conjure and is one I return to often\, both in my imagination and in real life \nMy work is inspired by the natural world and by the fragility and complexity inherent within notions of home and belonging. Uprooted explores the intersection between these two concerns. The abstracted imagery that makes up these artworks emerged from microscopic explorations of the forest floor. This perspective opened a pathway to exploring climate anxiety\, uncertainty and solastalgia – the distress and grief one feels when a familiar environment is altered beyond recognition. \nViewers encounter the work through projected light\, activating intricate paper cutouts of imagined natural forms and clustered houses. As shadows shift and expand across the space\, small gestures become monumental. The shadowy transformations of scale\, movement and complexity invite reflection on themes of vulnerability and resilience\, and on the ways our sense of home is shaped\, disrupted\, and reimagined. \nThis work builds on the shadow-based work I have been creating with Mere Phantoms Studios over the past twelve years (https://www.merephantoms.com/). It is the first iteration of a longer-term creative-research process. \nAbout Jaimie Robson\nJaimie Robson is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in cut paper/shadow\, and porcelain. She uses traditional craft-based techniques to create contemporary artworks and installations. In 2011 she co-founded the artist collective Mere Phantoms\, along with Atelier Make\, a ceramics studio in Montreal. She completed her BFA at Emily Carr University (2002) and an MA (Media Studies) at Concordia University 2012. She has exhibited in Canada and internationally including the Istanbul Biennial (2013)\, Brandts Museum (Denmark\, 2015)\, Grunt Gallery (2017)\, Hamilton Art Inc\, and Surrey Art Gallery (2022). Jaimie has led numerous neighbourhood-based public art projects and brings participatory practices elements into her work. \n\nCrédits: Uprooted bénéficie du soutien financier du Conseil des arts du Canada et du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. \nCredits: Uprooted benefits from the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.ritory: Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon. \n.  .

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema Night: I Know Where I'm Going - March 2nd
DESCRIPTION:I know where I’m going (1945)\nDir. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger\nEngland | 1945 | 1h 32m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \nThis March 2nd\, join KIAC Classic Films for a screening of I Know Where I’m Going! on the big screen at Dënäkär Zho/KIAC Ballroom. This late entry to the canon of Scottish Romanticism is sure to delight both Hallmark movie acolytes and critics alike. The legendary writer/director/producer duo\, Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell also known as “the Archers” serve up their distinctive style. \nTake a trip to the stormy Scottish Hebrides to meet your fiance – the wealthiest man in Britain! Miss your ferry and get stranded with a random dashing falconer. Rail against the rain. The fog. The wind. The gales. Search for a golden eagle. Check out a ceilidh. Lie to yourself. Lie to the falconer. Ignore everything the locals tell you. Endanger people’s lives in an enormous whirlpool. Then\, live happily ever after? Gorgeous\, moody cinematography and a stubborn (perhaps unlikeable) heroine make this one of Powell and Pressburger’s best-loved films.

SUMMARY:Amour Courtois: Medieval Meets Jazz at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Amour Courtois: Medieval Meets Jazz\nMatthew Baker\, barytone; Efrén López\, multi-instrumentalist; Baptiste Bailly\, piano & arrangements\nCo-presented with Whitehorse Concerts\n—\nWed\, March 4\ndoors at 7\, Pre-show chat at 7:30\, concert to follow\nPay-what-you-want – kiacyukon.square.site \n– \nRuntime: Approximately 100 min \nAmour Courtois is a bold and evocative musical project led by French jazz pianist Baptiste Bailly\, reimagining 14th-century French songs through the lens of contemporary improvisation. Inspired by the enduring emotional resonance of medieval melodies\, Bailly collaborates with Matthew Baker on the baryton and Efren López on the hurdy-gurdy and ouds\, crafting an anachronistic yet striking soundscape. Their repertoire – featuring works by Machaut\, Binchois\, and Lescurel – bridges centuries and highlights the timelessness of human expression. \nAmour Courtois treats medieval songs not as static artifacts but as living works. While the original melodies are respected as closely as possible\, with the aim of preserving their essence\, the musicians change the settings\, time signatures\, chords\, context\, and costumes. Improvised or newly written passages are integrated into the pieces\, like moments of intimate expression nourished by the eclecticism of their personalities and influences\, revealing a touching and spontaneous musical craftsmanship\, boundless and timeless. \n– \nThanks to our funders – Government of Canada\, Yukon Government\, Canada Council for the Arts\nand special thanks to Northern Vision Development / the Downtown Hotel

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema Night: The Gleaners and I - March 19th
DESCRIPTION:The Gleaners and I (2000)\nDir. Agnes Varda\nFrance | 2000 | 1h 22m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \nThis March 19th\, join KIAC Classic Films for a screening of The Gleaners and I on the big screen at Dënäkär Zho/KIAC Ballroom. In this ode to counter-culture\, the legendary French director\, Agnes Varda discovers digital cameras and turns them on the fringes of society and those who choose alternatives to mainstream life – including herself. Her colourful cast of ‘gleaners’ – people who gather leftover crops after a harvest – exist on the edge of the fields and cities. They collect everything from food to urban waste for necessity\, for art\, and for resistance. Varda travels across France collecting/gleaning all of her interactions with the people she meets and weaving them into unexpected and touching narratives. \nThe Gleaners and I was an international hit\, resonating with and inspiring people from all parts of society and bringing Varda back into the deserved spotlight. In this documentary of scavengers\, foragers\, dumpster-divers\, thrifters\, anti-consumerists\, and artists\, Varda demonstrates all of the curiosity\, empathy\, and joy her work is known for. Ce qui est dechet pour l’un est tresor pour l’autre.

Since winning her first Juno Award in 2005 with her band Taima\, Elisapie’s body of work has been praised many times. \nOn September 15th 2023\, Elisapie unveiled Inuktitut\, her fourth solo record. On this album\, the Inuk artist covers ten classic rock and pop songs ranging from the 1960’s to the 90’s translated into Inuktitut\, her mother tongue. The result is an emotional\, autobiographical soundtrack where each song is associated with a loved one or an intimate story. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike\, Inuktitut is the artist’s second album to land a shortlist nomination for the Polaris Music Prize. Its success also earned Elisapie a Juno Award in the Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year category\, as well as five awards at the 2024 ADISQ Gala\, and allowed her to play over 70 concerts in Canada\, the U.S. and Europe. She also just got nominated for this year’s upcoming Juno Awards for Best Album of the year\, as well as for Best Adult Alternative Album of the year. \nAside from her musical career\, Elisapie is known for creating and producing documentaries and the first Canada-wide broadcast TV show to celebrate the National Indigenous Peoples’ Day\, called Le Grand Solstice.
