SUMMARY:'Jazz on the Road' - Hannah Mazurek Quartet Live Concert at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Fri\, Nov 7\nDoors open – 7:30 / Music – 8:00\nPay what you want! Reserve your spot at kiacyukon.square.site\nCo-presented with Jazz Yukon – ‘Jazz on the Road’ \nHow do you create music that’s simple and comforting\, but adventurous and exciting at the same time? In other words\, can you make an audience go “ahhhh” in the same sentence as “hunh?” With a dash of vocal jazz syntax\, a tablespoon of surprising harmonic progressions\, some honest lyricism\, and a splash of delightful time signature math\, The Hannah Mazurek Quartet will do their best to serve you up a platter of tunes that are equal parts personal and playful. This genre-defying project will combine original composition with favourites from artists that toe the lines between jazz\, blues\, classical\, folk\, and whatever else they happened to be listening to that day. \nHannah Mazurek is a Whitehorse-based vocalist\, multi-instrumentalist\, conductor\, composer\, and technician. They have performed in concert and theatre settings across the country including the oratorio Miziwe… everywhere by composer Barbara Assiginaak (Koerner Hall\, Toronto\, 2019)\, Larrikin Entertainment’s WYRD: A Musical Unfairytale (Yukon Arts Centre\, 2023)\, The Loon Returns (Problematic Orchestra\, 2023)\, and I Think I’m Fallin: The Songs of Joni Mitchell (Belfry Theatre\, Victoria\, 2023). With a formal background in classical music\, they are the current Artistic Director of Whitehorse’s Problematic Orchestra and have composed for theatre\, stage\, and film. \nWhen they’re not writing or performing\, you can find Hannah coiling cables and plugging things in\, as well as playing in many\, many\, many bands. They also do other things\, perhaps too many things\, but they’ll spare you from having to read a list of them. Learn more at hannahmazurek.com\n–\nThe band:\nHannah Mazurek (vocals and keys)\nJordy Walker (guitar)\nAdam Cripps (bass)\nJake Jenne (drums)\n—\nphoto: Jon Walters\n—\nThanks to our funders: Government of Canada\, Yukon Government\, and Canada Council for the Arts\nSpecial thanks to our show sponsor Northern Vision Development (Downtown Hotel\, Eldorado Hotel\, and Midnight Sun Hotel)

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema: The Big City
DESCRIPTION:The Big City/Mahanagar (1963)\nDir. Satyajit Ray\nBengal | 1963 | 2h 16m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \n“You don’t recognize my mole? I’m still the same housewife.” This November 9th\, come and enjoy the KIAC Class Films presentation of The Big City. The Big City\, or Mahanagar\, is a 1963 film by Satyajit Ray that depicts what happens when a traditional Bengali middle class family in Calcutta meets the modernity of women’s liberation and  empowerment. Arati (Madhabi Mukherjee)\, a housewife and Subrata (Anil Chatterjee)\, her husband must navigate this change in power dynamics as Subrata loses his job as a bank manager and Arati excels in her new job as a door to door salesperson. Arati’s new job moves her from housebound housewife to downtown dealmaker\, giving her independence and confidence that challenge her presumed role and her husband’s masculinity in the patriarchal world of Bengal. Now the breadwinner of the family Arati is faced with the effects of this massive upheaval of roles. Satyajit Ray depicts these rising and falling egos with nuanced dialogue and the fascinating backdrop of 1963 Calcutta.

SUMMARY:Les Hay Babies – Tintamarre! - Concert à Dënäkär Zho / KIAC
DESCRIPTION:Les Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \n________________________________________________________________________________ \nThe Hay Babies – Tintamarre \nAs part of Coup de Cœur Francophone 2025\, the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\, in partnership with the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY)\, is proud to present The Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \nDescription \nLes Hay Babies are friends first: fun comes before work and work is done while having fun. New Brunswick-born Acadians Julie Aubé\, Katrine Noël and Vivianne Roy have been bringing forth their sparkling\, multifaceted folk-rock for over a decade\, renewing their musical proposition with each new release. Since forming a band in 2011\, they have launched their EP Folio (2012) and the albums* Mon homesick heart* (2014)\, La 4ième dimension (version longue) (2016)\, and Boîte aux lettres (2020)\, shifting from indie-folk and country to classic rock and disco. They reinvent their sound once again with their fourth album\, to come out in 2024: a trademark of theirs as much as their unwavering drive and interest in actualizing sounds from past decades. \n________________________________________________________________________________ \nL’Association franco-yukonnaise remercie ses bailleurs de fonds\, Coup de cœur francophone et leurs partenaires pour leur appui essentiel à la réalisation de cet événement. / The Association franco-yukonnaise thanks its funders\, Coup de cœur francophone\, and their partners for their essential support in making this event possible. \n\nGouvernement du Yukon\nGouvernement du Canada\nLotteries Yukon\nJazz Yukon\nNorthern Vision Développement\nMusicAction\nSiriusXM\nUnisTV\nRadio-Canada\nGouvernement du Québec\nSocan\nAkufen
