SUMMARY:Sarah Harmer Live at Dënäkär Zho / Klondike Institute of Art & Culture
DESCRIPTION:FRI\, OCT 3rd\ndoors open: 7:30\nshowtime: 8:00 \nwith an opening set by Corbin Murdoch\nCorbinMurdoch.Bandcamp.com \nTickets at the KIAC Store\n– \nSarah Harmer is a multiple award-winning\, platinum-selling singer-songwriter and environmental activist. Her solo music career launched with the now classic debut You Were Here (2000) and includes six critically acclaimed albums\, including her latest\, Are You Gone\, released via Arts & Crafts in 2020. \nA deeply personal and political collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life\, the urgency of the climate crisis\, and the question of loss\, Sarah called the album a spiritual successor of sorts to her acclaimed 2000 debut. Its simple title\, Are You Gone\, is a meditation on presence and a bookend to the questions posed on You Were Here – a sharpened\, more electric confrontation with the realities of nature and human nature. \nBetween co-founding the citizen’s organization PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land) and leading the successful effort to prevent an open-pit gravel mine in a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve on the Niagara Escarpment\, Sarah has become a fixture in local politics and advocacy. In 2022\, Sarah helped launch the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition in her home province of Ontario to protect water\, farmland\, and biodiversity. This spring\, she received the prestigious 2025 Juno Humanitarian Award\, presented by Dr. David Suzuki in Vancouver BC for her human rights and advocacy work\, and was recently honoured with the keys to the city of Burlington presented by Mayor Marianne Meed Ward for her ongoing contributions to the region. \nSarah is currently writing songs for a new album. \n* * * * * \n“Are You Gone is the best album of Harmer’s career” \n– Globe and Mail \n“One of the most accomplished and affecting albums in her already \nremarkable catalogue” \n– Exclaim! 9/10 \n“Sarah’s voice remains as warm and wise as ever” \n– Paste \n“Are You Gone is a journey across time\, place\, learning\, and loss that Sarah Harmer is an incredibly gracious guide to take us on” \n– Folk Alley \n“A folky\, minor-key song about ice skating at night\, with a gentle vocal and a sturdy melody\, that maps a precarious relationship onto the wintry conditions.” (on St. Peter’s Bay) \n– The New York Times \n–\nThanks to our co-presenter The Yukon Arts Centre\nand our funders: Government of Canada\, Yukon Government\, Canada Council for the Arts

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema: Withnail and I
DESCRIPTION:Withnail and I (1987) \nDir. Bruce Robinson | England | 1987 | 1h 47min \n7pm (doors at 6:30)\nFree entry and cash concessions. \nAre you the farmer?! This October 26th\, come and enjoy the KIAC Classic Films presentation of Withnail and I (1987). Written and directed by Bruce Robinson – his directorial debut and second writing credit after 1984’s The Killing Fields which earned him an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA win – and starring Paul McGann\, Richard Griffiths\, and Richard E. Grant (his debut)\, this classic film with mega cult status has heaps of quotable lines. In a haze of boozing mayhem\, two out of work actor friends resist adulthood and responsibility at the end of the 1960s in Camden Town.  After they run out of fivers for the pub\, they wind up on holiday (by mistake!) in the British countryside where they face the monotony of the real world they so desperately fear. Although sometimes despairing and definitely abrasive\, their friendship and growth is charming and highly quotable! \n\n\nFilm contains mild sex/nudity\, no violence\, severe profanity and alcohol/drug use\, and mild frightening scenes.
