SUMMARY:Beh Movāzāt / به موازات (In Parallel) FILM SCREENING AND Q&A - with Kiarash Dadgar
DESCRIPTION:Beh Movāzāt / به موازات (In Parallel)\nFILM SCREENING AND Q&A – with Kiarash Dadgar \nMonday\, September 29th – Doors 7pm\, Screening 7:30pm\n@ KIAC Dënäkär Zho Ballroom \nJoin filmmaker\, writer\, and KIAC Artist-in-Residence Kiarash Dadgar for a unique opportunity to view a selection of his works and other works by contemporary Iranian creators\, followed by a Q&A. \nKiarash Dadgar\nEsfahan\, Iran/Tkaronto (Toronto)\nKIAC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE: September 9th – Oct 6th\, 2025\n \nKiarash Dadgar is an award-winning filmmaker\, theatre artist\, actor\, and producer originally from Iran\, now based in Toronto\, Canada. Holding an MA in Dramatic Literature from Soore Art University in Tehran and currently pursuing an MFA in Film at York University\, Kiarash’s work explores themes of cultural conflict\, isolation\, and personal autonomy. His acclaimed short film The Steak has been featured at over 220 festivals worldwide\, earning numerous awards including the AGBO Fellowship Award with mentorship by the Russo Brothers. His practice spans directing\, producing\, acting\, and scriptwriting\, blending dark humor and social commentary to challenge audiences. \nAbout the Film Screening: \nCuratorial Note:\nWhen people speak of Iranian cinema\, they often expect stories of hardship\, oppression\, or political unrest. But this curated program moves in parallel to those expectations. These five films — lyrical\, surreal\, uncanny\, and emotionally precise — challenge the stereotypical narratives imposed on Iranian filmmakers. From mythic returns and fractured memories to dream factories and quiet rebellions\, each work reveals a world adjacent to what is assumed. In Parallel is not an escape from Iranian identity\, but a reimagining of its cinematic language — a space where fantasy\, abstraction\, and absurdity are not deviations\, but declarations. \nWhite Winged Horse\nDirector & Writer: Mahyar Mandegar\nA man returns to his war-torn hometown\, searching for his childhood sweetheart who had promised him eternal love — if he were to return as a white-winged horse. \nFragments of a Revolution\nDirector & Writer: Sahand Sarhaddi\nAn experimental film about narrations of two journal photos from Iran’s revolution in 1979. \nFalling Up\nDirector & Writer: Maryam Bakhtiari\nOne night\, a man’s dream doesn’t proceed as he ordered. The company that produces dreams tells him the fault occurred due to a similarity with a young girl’s dream. They must spend a day in the company to resolve it. \nOrthodontics\nDirector & Writer: Mohammadreza Mayghani\nAmitis is a teenage girl under pressure from orthodontic treatment. But suddenly\, she does a strange thing with her friend Sara. \nThe Steak\nDirector & Writer: Kiarash Dadgar\nA birthday party preparation is thrown into chaos by an awful event. \nStay after the screening for a brief Q&A with Kiarash.\nThis screening is FREE and presented as part of the Artist in Residence program hosted by the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (KIAC) – see you there!
