SUMMARY:Opening Reception 記憶犯罪 | Memory Crimes | Les Crimes de Mémoire
DESCRIPTION:Taiwanese-Canadian artist Edward FuChen Juan explores the intersections of personal memory\, collective history\, and decolonization through printmaking and handmade paper. Drawing from Taiwanese Gampi papermaking traditions alongside plants native to Canada\, Juan creates intricate works that weave together family histories\, cultural knowledge\, and reflections on displacement\, justice\, and healing.\n\nThe exhibition considers the legacy of Taiwan’s White Terror alongside contemporary conversations around truth\, reconciliation\, and Indigenous sovereignty in Canada. Through handmade paper\, intaglio printmaking\, and large-scale installation\, Memory Crimes invites visitors to reflect on how materials can carry memory\, preserve histories\, and create space for reconciliation.\n\nTo support this story\, KIAC & SOVA will be jointly hosting a Washi Paper Making Workshop as part of the Print & Publishing course\, open to the public.Saturday\, August 810:00 AM–2:00 PMMore details and registration information will be announced separately.\n\nAbout the Artist\n\nEdward FuChen Juan (阮福辰) is a queer Taiwanese Canadian visual artist working primarily in printmaking\, papermaking\, and inkmaking. His practice combines copper etching\, aquatint\, silkscreen\, chine-collé\, and handmade paper to examine human rights activism\, decolonization\, and the experiences of the Taiwanese diaspora. His work is grounded in oral histories\, material research\, and visual documentation of people and places across Taiwan and Canada.\n\nEdward lives and works in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.\nWe look forward to welcoming you to ODD Gallery for the opening celebration and throughout the exhibition.
