The work grapples with wildfires that are wreaking havoc on the landscape and uprooting small communities. The project begins on the forest floor\, bringing a microscopic lens to the ground beneath our feet. This up-close perspective serves as an entry point for thinking about larger issues of climate anxiety\, uncertainty\, and the notion of solastalgia. \nArtist Statement\nI am an interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal. I use traditional craft-based techniques to create contemporary artworks and installations. The artworks in this exhibition represent my ongoing interest in working with cut paper in relation to elements of light and shadow. Having grown up on BC’s west coast\, the mossy forest floor is the most comforting place I can conjure and is one I return to often\, both in my imagination and in real life \nMy work is inspired by the natural world and by the fragility and complexity inherent within notions of home and belonging. Uprooted explores the intersection between these two concerns. The abstracted imagery that makes up these artworks emerged from microscopic explorations of the forest floor. This perspective opened a pathway to exploring climate anxiety\, uncertainty and solastalgia – the distress and grief one feels when a familiar environment is altered beyond recognition. \nViewers encounter the work through projected light\, activating intricate paper cutouts of imagined natural forms and clustered houses. As shadows shift and expand across the space\, small gestures become monumental. The shadowy transformations of scale\, movement and complexity invite reflection on themes of vulnerability and resilience\, and on the ways our sense of home is shaped\, disrupted\, and reimagined. \nThis work builds on the shadow-based work I have been creating with Mere Phantoms Studios over the past twelve years (https://www.merephantoms.com/). It is the first iteration of a longer-term creative-research process. \nAbout Jaimie Robson\nJaimie Robson is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in cut paper/shadow\, and porcelain. She uses traditional craft-based techniques to create contemporary artworks and installations. In 2011 she co-founded the artist collective Mere Phantoms\, along with Atelier Make\, a ceramics studio in Montreal. She completed her BFA at Emily Carr University (2002) and an MA (Media Studies) at Concordia University 2012. She has exhibited in Canada and internationally including the Istanbul Biennial (2013)\, Brandts Museum (Denmark\, 2015)\, Grunt Gallery (2017)\, Hamilton Art Inc\, and Surrey Art Gallery (2022). This exhibition brings together the work of artists and makers from the Northern Fibres Guild\, an organization that has supported and nurtured Yukon fibre artists since its beginnings in 1974. \n\n\n\nRooted in traditional techniques like spinning\, weaving\, dyeing\, and felting\, and expanding into contemporary interpretations of textile art\, these works speak to the resourcefulness\, creativity\, and quiet resilience of making in the North. Each piece carries a unique story — of material transformed\, of time held in stitch and thread\, of ideas shared in community. \n\n\n\nLike the midnight sun itself\, these works radiate warmth\, clarity\, and a sense of wonder. They invite us to consider the power of slow\, intentional creation — and the ways in which fibre connects us to the land\, to each other\, and to the long thread of creative practice that we continue to weave together. \n\n\n\nNorthern Fibres Guild\n\n\n\nThe Northern Fibres Guild is a community of artists\, makers\, and enthusiasts dedicated to the fibre arts in the Yukon. Founded in 1974 as the Yukon Weavers’ Guild\, the organization has grown over the decades to embrace a wide range of traditional and contemporary textile practices — including spinning\, weaving\, dyeing\, knitting\, felting\, sewing\, and more. Based in Whitehorse and open to members from across the territory and beyond\, the Guild provides a welcoming space for people of all skill levels to learn\, create\, and connect. Through regular workshops\, exhibitions\, artist talks\, and social events\, we foster the exchange of knowledge\, ideas\, and inspiration among fibre lovers of all backgrounds. SUMMARY:From Rags to Rug: Community Loom Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:As part of Weaving the Midnight Sun and the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival\, textile artist Janice Brodie invites the public into the process of community weaving. \nUsing scraps\, old linens\, and fabric donated by Dawson locals and drawn from her own stash\, Janice will spend the day weaving a communal rug on a floor loom in the ODD Gallery. This is a celebration of reuse\, resilience\, and the stories we share through cloth. \nVisitors are welcome to stop in\, ask questions\, contribute material\, or even try weaving a few rows. Whether you participate for a moment or an hour\, your presence becomes part of the finished piece — a rug woven by many hands\, for many to enjoy. \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome!

DESCRIPTION:JUAN ORTIZ-APUY  |  TROPICANA February 13 – April 12\, 2025 ODD Gallery\, Dënäkär Zho |  KIAC Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \n\n\n\nOPENING RECEPTION & ARTIST TALK: Thursday\, February 13th at 7PM – 10PM\, Artist talk at 7:30PM – 8:30PM \n\n\n\nTROPICANA\n\n\n\nA GENUINE FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF OBJECTS\, THE YOUTH EXHIBITION TROPICANA SEEKS TO EXAMINE THE WAY WE CONSUME TODAY THE BETTER TO UNDERSTAND ITS FUTURE IMPACTS. \n\n\n\nWhen confronting the environmental crisis\, in which unbridled production of goods is threatening the diversity of the natural world\, it’s essential that we take an interest in how things are displayed\, commercialized and consumed\, whether in brick-and-mortar store windows or online. This youth exhibition\, specially designed for kids and teenagers aged 6 to 14\, casts a critical eye on modern consumer society and advertising aimed at children\, which often features animals\, colours\, sounds and shapes designed to appeal to them. For the occasion\, Montreal-based Costa Rican artist Juan Ortiz-Apuy has created a visual and sound environment allowing visitors to explore the language of advertising and its ability to act on us\, in sometimes unexpected ways. The artist based his research on new marketing strategies that have emerged in the social media era\, i.e.\, the phenomenon of “unboxing” and ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) videos. Besides a guided tour\, children can take part in a workshop designed to awaken their senses\, creativity and critical thinking. Observation games to be completed with family members round out the experience. \n\n\n\nJuan Ortiz-Apuy\n\n\n\nCosta Rica–born Juan Ortiz-Apuy has lived and worked in Montreal since 2003. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University. Working in his favoured techniques of collage and assemblage\, he makes art driven by thinking around consumer goods\, often employing humour to explore the advertising and media strategies associated with them. His works—which he presents in the form of multimedia installations—draw inspiration from design\, art history and pop culture. His work has been shown in several museums and art centres across Canada as well as abroad\, including the Fondation Phi pour l’art contemporain (Montreal)\, Birch Contemporary Gallery (Toronto)\, OPTICA\, centre d’art contemporain (Montréal)\, ARTSPACE (Peterborough)\, the Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa)\, the IKEA Museum (Älmhult\, Sweden)\, as well as at MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image in Montreal and Manif d’art 7 in Quebec City. In 2011 he was the beneficiary of the Halifax Regional Municipality Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program. Upcoming projects include a solo show at Open Space (Victoria)\, and residencies at MASS MoCA (North Adams\, MA\, USA) and the Zentrum Für Keramik (Berlin). DESCRIPTION:IT’S BAAAAAAACK \nOriginally created by Aubyn O’Grady and now organized by KIAC\, Drawlidays V is a secret santa portrait exchange. By way of drawing names\, you’ll be assigned someone in Dawson to *secretly*  make a portrait of by Friday\, December 6th.  At the same time somebody will be secretly making a portrait of you. You will have one month to produce your portrait! \nThe Drawlidays event has been donated to KIAC as a fundraiser! When you sign up\, you’re not only committing to producing a portrait\, but also to making a donation to KIAC on behalf of the person you are drawing. Suggested Drawlidays donation is $5 – $25.  \nOn the eve of Thursday\, December 12th portraits will be hung and on display in the ODD Gallery.  Portraits are for keepsies\, and this year we’d like to keep them on display for ONE WEEK ONLY. DESCRIPTION:ANNE STEVES  |  FLIGHT [CAGE]\nOctober 24th – December 7th\, 2024\nODD Gallery\, Dënäkär Zho |  KIAC\nTr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \nOPENING RECEPTION & ARTIST TALK + RUG TUFTING DEMO: Thursday\, October 24th\, 7pm – 10pm\nJoin Anne Steves at her exhibition opening Flight [Cage] where she will be discussing her artistic practice and demonstrating how she created her life-size bird rugs with the use of a rug tufting machine. \nWine and snacks provided. \n\nWelsh-Canadian artist Anne Steves invites us to reflect on the universal and intimate dilemmas of life\, loss\, and connection – avian and otherwise – through her exhibition Flight [Cage]. Featuring tufted wool rugs\, photographs\, and her own written reflections\, she transforms images of lifeless birds – her own and those gleaned from friends both near and online – into large\, human-scale artworks. As children\, we are admonished not to touch dead animals. Steves\, however\, seeks connection\, merging her own body with those of the birds through safe and beautiful surrogates\, mirroring their final poses in her photography\, attempting to enter their world. Her work invites gallery visitors to join her in interacting with these tactile proxies\, absorbing the words and images presented and sitting with the feelings and thoughts that emerge.

SUMMARY:STEPS + ODD Gallery Present: Raven Shares the Sun
DESCRIPTION:KRYSTLE SILVERFOX  |  RAVEN SHARES THE SUN\nOctober 2024 – September 2025 Front Street & Princess Street Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \nOPENING RECEPTION: Tentatively Scheduled for January 15th\, 2025 ARTIST TALK: TBD \nRaven Shares the Sun is a story about how Raven uses their shape-shifting abilities to transform themselves into various forms in order to steal the Sun from a great Chief. Long ago\, the world has only darkness because the Sun\, Stars and Moon were stored away in bentwood boxes owned by a great Chief. Raven – a bird who loves shiny things – created a plan to acquire the celestial beings. Raven first disguised himself as a spruce needle floating in the water\, and the Chief’s daughter accidentally drank Raven\, becoming pregnant with a son (Raven). Once the boy was born\, the Chief allowed his grandson to play with the bentwood boxes that contained the Moon and Stars – which Raven disguised as a boy released into the dark sky. The Chief tells his grandson he cannot play with the last box containing the Sun\, as he doesn’t want the Sun to be released too. However\, after the young boy sulks his grandfather relents\, allowing his grandson to play with the last box – but only if he doesn’t touch the Sun. As soon as the boy opened the box\, he grabbed the Sun and instantly transformed back into a White Raven with the Sun in his beak. As a quick escape\, Raven flew out the smoke stack\, becoming the black bird we know today. Raven then released the sun for all to share and enjoy. \nComprised of 5 minimalist anamorphic sculptures placed on the Dawson City waterfront along the Yukon River\, the artwork will appear abstract until viewers stand in a specific location where the art pieces align to create an abstracted image of Raven. To celebrate the return of the Sun after the Yukon’s long and dark winters\, Raven will appear to hold the sun in his beak once the Sun’s path returns to hover over the road to the Midnight Dome in mid-January. \nThe sculpture\, produced by Northern Tutchone artist Krystle Silverfox\, pays homage to the story of Raven and the Sun – an important ancestral Yukon First Nations Story. \n\n\n \n\nCBC Interview\n\n\n\n\nKrystle Silverfox is a member of Selkirk First Nation (Wolf Clan)\, and interdisciplinary visual artist. She currently lives and works on the traditional territory of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation (Whitehorse\, Yukon). Silverfox holds both a BFA in Visual Art (2015); a BA in Gender\, Race\, Sexuality and Social Justice from UBC (2013); also an MFA in Interdisciplinary studies from Simon Fraser University (2019). Inspired by a material- focused practice\, Silverfox uses visual mediums to communicate ideas and tell stories. Silverfox’s work explores concepts of Indigenous futurism\, feminism\, activism\, and de-colonialism. \nSTEPS (Sustainable Thinking & Expressions in Public Spaces) This project is part of the CreateSpace Public Art Residency by STEPS Public Art \, a national program bringing public art to communities across the country. The residency is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts\, Canadian Race Relations Foundation with funding provided by the Government of Canada\, and TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our many partners. Wine and snacks will be served along side 9 original artworks exploring gossip as a method of creating and breaking bonds of connection between female BIPOC artists\, curated by Sanaa Humayun. \nCuratorial Statement\nSharp Teeth  investigates two related avenues of consideration: First – the use of whisper networks amongst racialized women as a form of relationship building\, and the way feminine language is used to de-legitimize the work done in these spaces. Second – how art/ curatorial relationships can be re-imagined to embody some of the reciprocal care of these racialized spaces in order to develop a better framework for curation/ art making that breaks down the current systems of patriarchy/ White Supremacy. \nThis body of work satirizes the use of feminine visual aesthetics in pop culture\, thinking about how feminine coded aesthetics often relegate feminine relationships to catty\, gossipy\, frivolous things\, and how this package can be reclaimed for a body of work that is on the surface very bright\, campy and mean\, while also holding tender relationships. Ones that are rooted in friendship and care\, ones that hold power despite being dismissed and devalued. Exploring how to bring these relationships out of the margins\, this work leans into the frivolity\, while also celebrating the deep and long lasting nature of these relationships\, without giving away the secrets held within them.
