SUMMARY:Beh Movāzāt / به موازات (In Parallel) FILM SCREENING AND Q&A - with Kiarash Dadgar
DESCRIPTION:Beh Movāzāt / به موازات (In Parallel)\nFILM SCREENING AND Q&A – with Kiarash Dadgar \nMonday\, September 29th – Doors 7pm\, Screening 7:30pm\n@ KIAC Dënäkär Zho Ballroom \nJoin filmmaker\, writer\, and KIAC Artist-in-Residence Kiarash Dadgar for a unique opportunity to view a selection of his works and other works by contemporary Iranian creators\, followed by a Q&A. \nKiarash Dadgar\nEsfahan\, Iran/Tkaronto (Toronto)\nKIAC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE: September 9th – Oct 6th\, 2025\n \nKiarash Dadgar is an award-winning filmmaker\, theatre artist\, actor\, and producer originally from Iran\, now based in Toronto\, Canada. Holding an MA in Dramatic Literature from Soore Art University in Tehran and currently pursuing an MFA in Film at York University\, Kiarash’s work explores themes of cultural conflict\, isolation\, and personal autonomy. His acclaimed short film The Steak has been featured at over 220 festivals worldwide\, earning numerous awards including the AGBO Fellowship Award with mentorship by the Russo Brothers. His practice spans directing\, producing\, acting\, and scriptwriting\, blending dark humor and social commentary to challenge audiences. \nAbout the Film Screening: \nCuratorial Note:\nWhen people speak of Iranian cinema\, they often expect stories of hardship\, oppression\, or political unrest. But this curated program moves in parallel to those expectations. These five films — lyrical\, surreal\, uncanny\, and emotionally precise — challenge the stereotypical narratives imposed on Iranian filmmakers. From mythic returns and fractured memories to dream factories and quiet rebellions\, each work reveals a world adjacent to what is assumed. In Parallel is not an escape from Iranian identity\, but a reimagining of its cinematic language — a space where fantasy\, abstraction\, and absurdity are not deviations\, but declarations. \nWhite Winged Horse\nDirector & Writer: Mahyar Mandegar\nA man returns to his war-torn hometown\, searching for his childhood sweetheart who had promised him eternal love — if he were to return as a white-winged horse. \nFragments of a Revolution\nDirector & Writer: Sahand Sarhaddi\nAn experimental film about narrations of two journal photos from Iran’s revolution in 1979. \nFalling Up\nDirector & Writer: Maryam Bakhtiari\nOne night\, a man’s dream doesn’t proceed as he ordered. The company that produces dreams tells him the fault occurred due to a similarity with a young girl’s dream. They must spend a day in the company to resolve it. \nOrthodontics\nDirector & Writer: Mohammadreza Mayghani\nAmitis is a teenage girl under pressure from orthodontic treatment. But suddenly\, she does a strange thing with her friend Sara. \nThe Steak\nDirector & Writer: Kiarash Dadgar\nA birthday party preparation is thrown into chaos by an awful event. \nStay after the screening for a brief Q&A with Kiarash.\nThis screening is FREE and presented as part of the Artist in Residence program hosted by the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (KIAC) – see you there!

SUMMARY:The General Store - Open Studio & Artist Talk at Ruby's Place - Nahanni McKay & Ben Evely
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to an open studio of The General Store! \nMacaulay House Artists in Residence Ben Evely and Nahanni McKay invite you to their Open Studio and Artist Talk at Ruby’s Place\, a Parks Canada KNHS building\, right next to KIAC! \n📅When: Friday\, August 29th\, 6 to 8 pm (Artist Talk at 7pm) \n📍Where: Ruby’s Place\, 914 2nd Avenue \nAll welcome\, refreshments served! \nShowcasing a collection of new works and work in progress\, The General Store is a collaborative project by current KIAC artists in residence Nahanni Mckay and Ben Evely. Inspired by growing up in Banff\, Alberta (on Treaty 7 Territory)\, the duo’s work examines the commodification of nature\, and the way places are shaped by tourism and recreation. Many small towns have shops selling a broad variety of goods\, often a general store. The open studio includes artworks that span various mediums and concepts related to their shared experiences. \nThe pair are drawn to the historical impacts of colonialism and the gold rush in Dawson City and current initiatives for reconciliation with First Nations\, and instilling respect for the land. The seasonal tourism economy\, and vibrant art community make Dawson an ideal setting to further expand on their ideas. \nBig thanks to Parks Canada KHNS and The Bunkhouse for supporting this residency project!

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:BRUNCH OF DREAMS – a post-sleepover party \nSunday\, July 27th. 11 am – 4 pm \nAt the KIAC Artist Residence in the Macaulay House and Yard space. \nCindy Baker and roses invite you to their Brunch of Dreams\, a post-sleepover party-style performative workshop and art installation where you will be encouraged to share your dreams\, play art games of chance\, and leave with a permanent magical memento inked onto your body by the artists themselves. \nTake time to rest\, tend\, and attune to shared symbology as we partake in aftercare rituals – bask in the energy of the afterglow. \nWear your pyjamas\, bring a snack or drink to share (brunch\, coffee\, and mimosas provided)\, and your collaborative spirit that we may create a space for generosity and care. \n  \nMacaulay House Artists in Residence: Roseanna Joy Nay (roses) and Cindy Baker  \nDuring their residency at the Macaulay House\, artists Roseanna Joy Nay (roses) and Cindy Baker will explore themes of intergenerational queer mentorship\, shared intimacy\, and the unconscious mind through a collaborative\, exploratory art practice. Their project will focus on the intersection of personal and collective dreams\, using an intuitive\, object-driven process to develop a shared language of symbols\, histories\, and queer vernacular.\nInformed by the landscape of Dawson City and the local history\, the duo will embark on a creative journey that blends the conscious and unconscious—allowing their dreams and waking experiences to intertwine.\nTheir practice will focus on building an embodied “dreamspace\,” where daily rituals\, found objects\, handmade props\, and materials drawn from their shared queer semiology will help manifest a collaborative unconscious landscape. While the exact outcome of their residency remains open-ended\, their aim is to create a space where meaning emerges from irrational imagery\, dreams\, and everyday interactions.\nThe residency will be a deep dive into the ways intimate\, intergenerational queer relationships inform artistic creation\, with an emphasis on mutual care and exchange. Both artists hope that the residency will help refine their collaborative process\, enriching their work and inspiring new ideas that might evolve into future public or private presentations.

SUMMARY:ARTIST TALK - Beyond the Algorithm: Art\, Ethics\, and AI with Cat Bluemke
DESCRIPTION:How can artists harness artificial intelligence as a meaningful tool rather than a threat? Join artist and educator Cat Bluemke for an engaging talk exploring her evolving practice at the intersection of emerging technologies\, game design\, and critical art-making. Drawing from years of boundary-pushing work\, Bluemke will share her journey and speak directly to the promises and perils of AI in creative spaces. \nThrough personal insight and practical examples\, this talk explores how AI can support artistic autonomy\, community engagement\, and collective authorship—without erasing the ethics of intellectual labor. Aimed at artists\, technologists\, and skeptics alike\, the conversation will also address pressing concerns around copyright\, consent\, and the commercialization of generative tools. \nThe session includes a 30-minute presentation of Bluemke’s work\, a 15-minute reflection on AI as a creative medium\, and a 20-30-minute open Q&A where attendees are encouraged to ask hard questions and challenge assumptions.

SUMMARY:Film Workshop: Cameraless filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:SCRATCH IT OUT! \nA great opportunity for participants to make their own 35mm animated or experimental film without a camera and without processing film. Animators like Norman McLaren and Len Lye explored the technique of direct cinema in the 1930s and almost 90 years later\, it still continuously surprises audiences. \nThe workshop will explore the multiple techniques of cameraless filmmaking and discover new ones along the way. Over the course of the week\, participants will be introduced to materials and tools that can be applied effectively through scratching\, painting and collage – directly on to the surface of motion picture film. We will also learn efficient methods of digitizing the work as moving image files using DIY scanning methods and re-purposing existing applications. \nAs the week progresses\, we take our ideas further\, shaping our projects with digital sound and music. And finally\, we will give our project life\, discovering new ways to implement finished films with popular digital editing and projection software. \nThe final workshop film will be shown at Sunday evening’s 8pm screening. \nThis workshop will take place in 3 parts\, allowing participants to work extensively on their pieces of film with the mentor available for questions and advice. \nIn the KIAC CLassroom \nTuesday\, April 15\, 6-9pm \nWednesday\, April 16\, 6-9pm \nFriday\, April 18\, Noon-3pm \nParticipants can come to one\, 2 or all 3 sessions. \nThe workshop is free. Please register at filmfest@kiac.ca or 993-5005 \nSteven Woloshen was born in Laval\, Canada in 1960. SUMMARY:Susan Schuppli: SOVA Artist-in-Residence Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Susan Schuppli is a researcher and artist based in the UK. She is Professor and Director of the Centre for Research Architecture\, Goldsmiths University of London and is also an investigative researcher with the human rights agency Forensic Architecture recipient of the 2024 Right Livelihood Award. Susan Schuppli’s fieldwork and documentary film practice is situated at the intersections between environmental struggles\, climate science\, and affected communities with a contemporary focus on the cryosphere and the politics of cold. \n\nCreative projects have been exhibited throughout Europe\, Asia\, Canada\, and the US. She has published widely within the context of media and politics and is author of the book\, Material Witness: Media\, Forensics\, Evidence published by MIT Press in 2020.\n\nSupported by Yukon School of Visual Arts\, the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (KIAC)\, YukonU\, with funding support from a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Connections Grant / Toronto Biennial of Art.\n\nOVERVIEW\n\nDr. Susan Schuppli will be working in collaboration with students from SOVA in Nicole’s 4D Studio class on her project SOUNDING ICE: sensing frozen flows. Via sound and various field recording strategies\, the project explores the signals of climate change found in and around the Yukon and Klondike Rivers—their confluences and histories.\n\nThe practice of ‘sounding’ refers both to the taking of depth measurements in a body of water as well as the sourcing of ‘evidence’ needed in a preliminary step towards taking action. This project and forthcoming website will document our collective efforts to ‘sound out’ local expressions and histories of the environment—Earth evidence—and its urgent calls to action.\n\nMy earlier work as an artist-researcher and writer explored material evidence\, specifically the ways in which non-human witnesses\, enter into trials and tribunals to testify to historical events\, in particular those involving political violence\, ethnic conflict\, and war crimes. This work assumed many different modes of communication from legal analysis and public advocacy to theoretical reflection and creative exploration. Current research and artistic production expands these investigations to examine how environmental systems and the transformations brought about by global warming are generating new forms of evidence; creating\, in effect\, a planetary archive of material witnesses.\n\nhttps://susanschuppli.com

SUMMARY:Re:Imagine | Re:Create - Reclaimed Public Art Residency OPEN CALL!
DESCRIPTION:Program Description\nThe ODD Gallery\, in collaboration with STEPS (Sustainable Thinking & Expressions in Public Spaces)\, is pleased to present Re:Imagine | Re:Create\, a public art initiative that champions sustainability\, creative reuse\, and community engagement. This program will commission the creation of an original site-specific public artworks utilizing reclaimed materials sourced from various locations across Dawson City\, including the municipal dump\, Thrift Store\, Free Store\, local construction sites\, mis-tint paint from Home Hardware\, and donations from voluntary community members. This initiative seeks to engage an artist with a demonstrated history of working with reclaimed materials\, ensuring the final artworks are not only structurally sound but also conceptually rigorous\, inclusive\, and accessible to a diverse audience. The selected artist will be challenged to consider both the environmental implications of material reuse and the social narratives embedded within the salvaged objects\, transforming discarded materials into evocative public art installations that foster dialogue and reflection. The completed works will be temporarily installed on the Dawson City dike as part of the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival (YRAF) taking place June 12 – 15\, 2025. By activating this prominent public space with thought-provoking and environmentally conscious art\, Re:Imagine | Re:Create aims to highlight the potential of creative sustainability while deepening community connections to both the artistic process and the local landscape. \nThis project is supported by STEPS Public Art\, the TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment and the Canadian Council for the Arts. \nPlease see our Public Art -> OPEN CALL – Re:Imagine | Re:Create page for full details on how and when to apply.\n \nWe’re looking forward to reviewing all potential proposals!\n\nAbout STEPS\n\n\n STEPS Public Art is a Canadian charity and social enterprise. STEPS offers services in public art management\, hoarding exhibits\, cultural planning\, and artist capacity building. SUMMARY:ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE - Johannas Zits B2B Nicole Sleeth ARTIST TALK
DESCRIPTION:Thursday September 19th @6pm – 8pm\, in the Dënäkär Zho (KIAC) Ballroom – Bar Service Available \nJOHANNES ZITS\nWith the use of audio-visual performances\, Johannes will be sharing his exploration of the sentience of nature. In working with the natural environment\, Zits extends the notion of the performer to include nature itself. Considering nature as an equal ensures that it can be neither construed as a passive prop nor adored and fixed in the realm of the sublime. \nNICOLE SLEETH\nCentred on the female gaze as an exploration of power\, connection\, and lived experience\, Nicole’s current body of work explores themes of home and belonging\, queer domesticity in a rural setting\, vulnerability and mortality\, and her relationship with the natural landscape. Within this context\, she examines contrasts between public and private life\, outdoor domesticity\, and how memory influences present emotions through metaphor.
