Wall Hanging; A Painterly approach to Felting

with visiting artist Alison McCreesh
(from Yellowknife, NWT)

This workshop touches on basic wet felting and needle felting techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring
photos or images that are inspiring to them (landscapes, animals, etc.).

Part 1 – Wet felting:
During this part of the workshop, each participant will create a sheet of felt. We will discuss wool as a medium
and how to approach it. Participants will get to play with different colours and wool textures from a painterly
approach and will work to create a unique sheet of felt and pieces of prefelt which they will them assemble in
accordance with their design.
For this part of the workshop, it is necessary to have a source of water and a source of electricity.

Part 2 – Needle felting:
The participants are introduced to needle felting; how it can be used to draw or sculpt. The participants then
needle felt a design onto a piece of synthetic felt. We once again experiment with ways of layering and
superimposing various colours to create light, depth and texture. Participants will use these new skills to
complete and add definition to the sheets they made. This workshop touches on basic wet felting and needle felting techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring photos or images that are inspiring to them (landscapes, animals, etc.).
