SUMMARY:Classic Cinema: Withnail and I
DESCRIPTION:Withnail and I (1987) \nDir. Bruce Robinson | England | 1987 | 1h 47min \n7pm (doors at 6:30)\nFree entry and cash concessions. \nAre you the farmer?! This October 26th\, come and enjoy the KIAC Classic Films presentation of Withnail and I (1987). Written and directed by Bruce Robinson – his directorial debut and second writing credit after 1984’s The Killing Fields which earned him an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA win – and starring Paul McGann\, Richard Griffiths\, and Richard E. Grant (his debut)\, this classic film with mega cult status has heaps of quotable lines. In a haze of boozing mayhem\, two out of work actor friends resist adulthood and responsibility at the end of the 1960s in Camden Town.  After they run out of fivers for the pub\, they wind up on holiday (by mistake!) in the British countryside where they face the monotony of the real world they so desperately fear. Although sometimes despairing and definitely abrasive\, their friendship and growth is charming and highly quotable! \n\n\nFilm contains mild sex/nudity\, no violence\, severe profanity and alcohol/drug use\, and mild frightening scenes.

SUMMARY:'Jazz on the Road' - Hannah Mazurek Quartet Live Concert at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Fri\, Nov 7\nDoors open – 7:30 / Music – 8:00\nPay what you want! Reserve your spot at kiacyukon.square.site\nCo-presented with Jazz Yukon – ‘Jazz on the Road’ \nHow do you create music that’s simple and comforting\, but adventurous and exciting at the same time? In other words\, can you make an audience go “ahhhh” in the same sentence as “hunh?” With a dash of vocal jazz syntax\, a tablespoon of surprising harmonic progressions\, some honest lyricism\, and a splash of delightful time signature math\, The Hannah Mazurek Quartet will do their best to serve you up a platter of tunes that are equal parts personal and playful. This genre-defying project will combine original composition with favourites from artists that toe the lines between jazz\, blues\, classical\, folk\, and whatever else they happened to be listening to that day. \nHannah Mazurek is a Whitehorse-based vocalist\, multi-instrumentalist\, conductor\, composer\, and technician. They have performed in concert and theatre settings across the country including the oratorio Miziwe… everywhere by composer Barbara Assiginaak (Koerner Hall\, Toronto\, 2019)\, Larrikin Entertainment’s WYRD: A Musical Unfairytale (Yukon Arts Centre\, 2023)\, The Loon Returns (Problematic Orchestra\, 2023)\, and I Think I’m Fallin: The Songs of Joni Mitchell (Belfry Theatre\, Victoria\, 2023). With a formal background in classical music\, they are the current Artistic Director of Whitehorse’s Problematic Orchestra and have composed for theatre\, stage\, and film. \nWhen they’re not writing or performing\, you can find Hannah coiling cables and plugging things in\, as well as playing in many\, many\, many bands. They also do other things\, perhaps too many things\, but they’ll spare you from having to read a list of them. Learn more at hannahmazurek.com\n–\nThe band:\nHannah Mazurek (vocals and keys)\nJordy Walker (guitar)\nAdam Cripps (bass)\nJake Jenne (drums)\n—\nphoto: Jon Walters\n—\nThanks to our funders: Government of Canada\, Yukon Government\, and Canada Council for the Arts\nSpecial thanks to our show sponsor Northern Vision Development (Downtown Hotel\, Eldorado Hotel\, and Midnight Sun Hotel)

SUMMARY:Classic Cinema: The Big City
DESCRIPTION:The Big City/Mahanagar (1963)\nDir. Satyajit Ray\nBengal | 1963 | 2h 16m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \n“You don’t recognize my mole? I’m still the same housewife.” This November 9th\, come and enjoy the KIAC Class Films presentation of The Big City. The Big City\, or Mahanagar\, is a 1963 film by Satyajit Ray that depicts what happens when a traditional Bengali middle class family in Calcutta meets the modernity of women’s liberation and  empowerment. Arati (Madhabi Mukherjee)\, a housewife and Subrata (Anil Chatterjee)\, her husband must navigate this change in power dynamics as Subrata loses his job as a bank manager and Arati excels in her new job as a door to door salesperson. Arati’s new job moves her from housebound housewife to downtown dealmaker\, giving her independence and confidence that challenge her presumed role and her husband’s masculinity in the patriarchal world of Bengal. Now the breadwinner of the family Arati is faced with the effects of this massive upheaval of roles. Satyajit Ray depicts these rising and falling egos with nuanced dialogue and the fascinating backdrop of 1963 Calcutta.

SUMMARY:Les Hay Babies – Tintamarre! - Concert à Dënäkär Zho / KIAC
DESCRIPTION:Les Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \n________________________________________________________________________________ \nThe Hay Babies – Tintamarre \nAs part of Coup de Cœur Francophone 2025\, the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\, in partnership with the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY)\, is proud to present The Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \nDescription \nLes Hay Babies are friends first: fun comes before work and work is done while having fun. New Brunswick-born Acadians Julie Aubé\, Katrine Noël and Vivianne Roy have been bringing forth their sparkling\, multifaceted folk-rock for over a decade\, renewing their musical proposition with each new release. Since forming a band in 2011\, they have launched their EP Folio (2012) and the albums* Mon homesick heart* (2014)\, La 4ième dimension (version longue) (2016)\, and Boîte aux lettres (2020)\, shifting from indie-folk and country to classic rock and disco. They reinvent their sound once again with their fourth album\, to come out in 2024: a trademark of theirs as much as their unwavering drive and interest in actualizing sounds from past decades. \n________________________________________________________________________________ \nL’Association franco-yukonnaise remercie ses bailleurs de fonds\, Coup de cœur francophone et leurs partenaires pour leur appui essentiel à la réalisation de cet événement. / The Association franco-yukonnaise thanks its funders\, Coup de cœur francophone\, and their partners for their essential support in making this event possible. \n\nGouvernement du Yukon\nGouvernement du Canada\nLotteries Yukon\nJazz Yukon\nNorthern Vision Développement\nMusicAction\nSiriusXM\nUnisTV\nRadio-Canada\nGouvernement du Québec\nSocan\nAkufen

SUMMARY:An Evening with Author / Composer Daniel Janke: Reading & Musical Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join Author / Composer Daniel Janke for a reading from his debut collection of stories “Book of Heroes” on Mosaic Press and a musical performance from his latest song cycle “Map of You”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– \nIn Book of Heroes\, composer\, filmmaker\, and writer Daniel Janke turns his artistic lens to fiction in a witty and deeply reflective debut collection where ordinary lives become the stage for extraordinary acts of grace and resilience. These are stories of travellers and observers. From the serene and starkly beautiful Yukon to a perilous swim on the beach in The Gambia\, and the sharp musings of a homeless philosopher beneath a city bridge\, Book of Heroes charts a world where the everyday clashes with the utterly surreal. Its characters\, caught between the mundane and the fantastic\, are called to act\, sometimes bravely\, sometimes absurdly\, but always with heart. \n– \nMap of You is a new recording release from Canadian composer Daniel Janke\, featuring soprano / pianist Rachel Fenlon. The song cycle was composed in 2023 – 2024\, and recorded in Berlin in early 2025. It is themed on the different types of love\, the existential nature of love\, and explores the question of whether we have truly experienced love in our lives. \n– \nDaniel Janke is a writer\, composer\, and filmmaker based near Whitehorse\, Yukon. Creator of the CBC series Northern Town and the award-winning NFB film How People Got Fire\, he has collaborated with leading Canadian musicians. Book of Heroes is his debut fiction collection\, following decades of multidisciplinary creative work.

SUMMARY:THIS SUNDAY - Classic Cinema: Rififi
DESCRIPTION:Rififi (1955)\nDir. Jules Dassin \nFrance | 1955 | 1h 58m \nFree entry\, Cash Concessions\, doors at 6:30. \n“I got busted in May. In June you were on the Riviera with a gigolo. You didn’t lose any time.” This December 14th catch the heist movie that established the heist movie genre on the big screen at KIAC/ Dënäkär Zho Ballroom. KIAC Classic Films presents Jules Dassin’s Rififi/Du Rififi Chez les Hommes (1955) in all its gritty tense hard-boiled pulp glory. An acclaimed director\, Jules Dassin had a long career in Hollywood in the 1940s until he was accused of being a communist and blacklisted. The film depicts Tony “Le Stephanois” who is just out of prison in Paris when his Italian pal Mario tells him about a foolproof score he’s got lined up. After seeing his old girlfriend\, Mado living large with the local gangster\, how could he really say no to some easy money. The scheme becomes more and more elaborate and the stakes get higher and higher until you could cut the tension with a knife. Rififi is famous for its 30-minute silent robbery scene – no dialogue\, no music. ASMR before ASMR! This film screening should not be missed.

SUMMARY:Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) - This Sunday!
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Zacharias Kunuk |  Igloolik\, Nunavut | 2025 | 1h 40m  \nJanuary 18\, Dënäkär Zho ballroom 7pm (doors at 6:30) \nIgloolik\, Nunavut\, 2000 BCE. Kaujak (Theresia Kappianaq) and Sapa (Haiden Angutimarik) were promised to each other at birth. After the sudden death of Kaujak’s father\, her mother marries a man from another camp tearing the young lovers apart. The promise of a better life quickly turns to a nightmare\, with aggressive suitors backed by an evil shaman vying to win Kaujak’s hand. But Kaujak resists\, holding on to hope that Sapa will one day make things right. \n~~~~ \n“All of my films are based in local stories and traditions from my local area\,” said Kunuk. “For me\, a film has to not only have a strong\, unique story and characters that people can relate to\, it also has to be very accurate to the local traditions of my area. I see my role and responsibility as a filmmaker and artist as someone who can record and document our past traditions and culture for future generations\, to re-write\nour history from our perspective. 100 years from now when we are long gone\, our films will still be here to show people how it was done. That is why everything needs to be very accurate\, so I work with elders and experts to make sure the dialogue\, costumes and clothing\, tools\, etc. are exactly as it would have been in the past.” \nUiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) is co-written by Kunuk and Samuel Cohn-Cousineau (Tautuktavuk: What We See\, Tia and Piujuq)\, and produced by Carol Kunnuk\, Jonathan Frantz (Tautuktavuk: What We See\, The Shaman’s Apprentice\, One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk) and Cohn-Cousineau\, with Susan Avingaq (Tautuktavuk: What We See\, Tia and Piujuq\, Uvanga) and Zacharias Kunuk serving as executive\nproducers and Cecilia Greyson (Tautuktavuk: What We See) as Associate Producer. \nCinematography by Jonathan Frantz and Thomas Leblanc-Murray (Festin Boréal\, Me Without You)\, costume design by Susan Avingaq\, production design by Avingaq and Melanie McNicoll (Uvanga) and editing by Kunuk\, Frantz and Raphael Sandler (Sam & Jean). \nThe film is being distributed in Canada by Isuma Distribution International.

SUMMARY:Naomi Kavka (DCMF Songwriter-in-residence) Live Concert
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7:30pm // Show at 8:00pm\nTickets by donation at the door. All proceeds support the DCMF Songwriter-in-Residence program!\n\n—-\n\nNaomi Kavka is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Smithers\, BC. A classically trained cellist\, vocalist\, and guitar player\, Kavka brings a myriad of influences to her songs\, forming a daring indie-rock sound that is musically polished\, lyrically visceral\, and emotionally raw. Her songs come from the unique perspective of a queer woman\, a child of a refugee\, a resident of the precipice of the wilderness of Canada. \nKavka’s band\, Geoff McFarlane (Handsome Eli) Ian Olmstead (Alex Cuba)\, Justin Gendreau (Pitted)\, and Jordy Walker\, deftly support her as they perform deeply intimate\, political\, and cathartic songs. Brought together by soundscapes and comradery\, they blend their backgrounds of jazz\, classical music\, folk traditions\, and rock to communicate complex emotional landscapes. Their latest album “Then and Now” (June 2024) is a collection of 8 songs produced by Jordy Walker. Ranging from driving indie jams\, melancholic ballads\, snarky anthems\, and art rock improvisations\, “Then and Now” demonstrates Kavka’s fearlessness and range as a performer and songwriter.

SUMMARY:ODD Gallery Exhibition | UPROOTED by Jaimie Robson
DESCRIPTION:JAIMIE ROBSON  |  UPROOTED\nFebruary 6 – March 14\, 2026\nODD Gallery\, Dënäkär Zho |  KIAC\nTr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory\, Dawson City\, Yukon \nOPENING RECEPTION: Thursday\, February 6th at 7PM – 9PM \nUPROOTED\nUprooted is an immersive shadow installation that explores notions of collective loss and grief as they relate to impending climate change. The work grapples with wildfires that are wreaking havoc on the landscape and uprooting small communities. The project begins on the forest floor\, bringing a microscopic lens to the ground beneath our feet. This up-close perspective serves as an entry point for thinking about larger issues of climate anxiety\, uncertainty\, and the notion of solastalgia. \nArtist Statement\nI am an interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal. I use traditional craft-based techniques to create contemporary artworks and installations. The artworks in this exhibition represent my ongoing interest in working with cut paper in relation to elements of light and shadow. Having grown up on BC’s west coast\, the mossy forest floor is the most comforting place I can conjure and is one I return to often\, both in my imagination and in real life \nMy work is inspired by the natural world and by the fragility and complexity inherent within notions of home and belonging. Uprooted explores the intersection between these two concerns. The abstracted imagery that makes up these artworks emerged from microscopic explorations of the forest floor. This perspective opened a pathway to exploring climate anxiety\, uncertainty and solastalgia – the distress and grief one feels when a familiar environment is altered beyond recognition. \nViewers encounter the work through projected light\, activating intricate paper cutouts of imagined natural forms and clustered houses. As shadows shift and expand across the space\, small gestures become monumental. The shadowy transformations of scale\, movement and complexity invite reflection on themes of vulnerability and resilience\, and on the ways our sense of home is shaped\, disrupted\, and reimagined. \nThis work builds on the shadow-based work I have been creating with Mere Phantoms Studios over the past twelve years (https://www.merephantoms.com/). It is the first iteration of a longer-term creative-research process. \nAbout Jaimie Robson\nJaimie Robson is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in cut paper/shadow\, and porcelain. SUMMARY:An Evening with Destroyer at Dënäkär Zho / Klondike Institute of Art & Culture
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Destroyer\nFri\, Feb 13 at Dënäkär Zho / KIAC Ballroom\nCo-presented with the Dawson City Music Festival\n\n\n\n\ndoors open at 7:30 / music at 8:00\nTickets on sale here \n\nOpening set by Cryptozoologists (solo)\nSince 2016\, Cryptozoologists have been creating scrappy art rock in Whitehorse\, Yukon\, with acclaim and without it. Backwater Station\, their new album\, is the band at their most honed and confident\, a culmination of a decade of irreverent and angst-fueled songwriting in Whitehorse’s fast-changing social landscape. As contrast to the romanticization of Whitehorse as the unblemished\, so-called “wilderness city\,” the album’s nine songs centre elements of the left-behind\, the unremarkable\, and the undesired of the gentrifying urban public sphere – the city’s undeveloped gravel lots\, its puke averted on the sidewalk\, and the route of its human waste to the municipal sewage lagoon. \n\n— \nWhat is a “boogie”? In the common tongue\, it’s a dance or an occasion to dance\, a song or a shindig\, an incitement to move\, quickly\, whether it’s on the floor or out of town\, getting down or lying low. This being a Destroyer album and not the common tongue\, the implications of a title like Dan’s Boogie are at once more alluring and dangerous. “A boogie is a hustle\, a scam that doesn’t quite work\, the moves we make when we’re up against it\,” explains Dan Bejar. “I think of spy work\, double agents\, sleeping with one eye open\, an eye on the exits. But I also think of petty street-level victories and losses and improv.” \nDan’s Boogie is a breakthrough album for Destroyer\, both in the sense that it makes moves that no Destroyer album to this point has made\, and in the sense that\, to record it\, Bejar had to burst through a series of intentional and unintentional barriers to write the songs. Initially challenging himself to not write songs so the ideas would well up inside of him until they breached containment\, the months following the completion of LABYRINTHITIS turned into one year then two\, at which point Bejar gave himself a New Year’s resolution to play the piano every day for an hour. That lasted about four days\, but the songs Bejar credits as coming from that resolution—“Cataract Time\,” “Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World\,” “Bologna\,” and “Dan’s Boogie” among them—are all-timer Destroyer songs across the vast spectrum Bejar and his collaborators have established for themselves: spectacle-laden pop epics\, personal piano ballads\, and smouldering works of mood that blur the lines between song and novel and cinema\, each brimming with the urgency of a state secret in the mind of a tortured spy. \nLead single “Bologna” is the most radical frame for this energy\, as it’s the first time Bejar wrote a song where he imagined himself as a supporting character. Taking lead is Fiver’s Simone Schmidt\, whose voice—tough and expressive\, piercing through the murk of the scene—is a siren’s call that haunts the album. The gravity of their voice pulls Dan’s Boogie into order around a sense of impending doom\, the way a fatale’s promise of the unusual and the ecstatic dooms the principal character of an erotic thriller. \n“Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World” is a delicious bit of contradiction\, a peppy song that came out of the havoc Bejar was intentionally wreaking on himself—its holiday cheeriness making the angst of its lyrics go down smoothly until the song veers off the road. “We are now entering a new phase\,” Bejar intones\, introducing layers of guitar and synthesizer that considerably darken the palette as he alternates between singing and speaking. The lyrics and vocals are improvised\, invented as Bejar recorded the demo in his garage—a manic stream-of-consciousness and simultaneously exquisite display of his songwriting mastery. \nContradiction informs much of Dan’s Boogie\, the fog swirling around Bejar illuminated by the friction between competing truths and tastes\, as when his interest in jazzy ballads runs aground on producer and bassist John Collins’ interest in bands like Led Zeppelin and Scritti Politti. When Bejar told Collins that he was thinking of Sammy Davis Jr.\, the title track bloomed into being\, Bejar adopting a Rat Pack swagger with almost delusional glee against a dreamy soundscape of soaring guitars\, lush horns\, jazz drumming\, spaced-out synths\, and\, perhaps truest to how Bejar sees himself\, plinking lounge piano. \nIn terms of shaping sound\, the centerpiece of Dan’s Boogie may be “Cataract Time\,” an eight-minute epic that ranks as some of the heaviest lyrics Bejar has ever written\, and one of Destroyer’s most musically intricate compositions. Borne aloft on an easygoing groove\, Bejar’s lyrics—“a reckoning\, a dressing down” as he describes them—are transfigured\, their melancholy tasting almost counterintuitively like hope. It’s an intimate song that puts away Destroyer’s usual urban fable milieu in exchange for bracing interiority\, but its lilting groove can see a future\, one that Bejar and his band are eager to meet. \nIt is\, to use Bejar’s phrase\, the kind of song you make when you’re up against it\, when it seems as if the world is crashing down upon you. And therein lies the album’s most radical shift: Where previous Destroyer albums were locked in combat with the world\, Dan’s Boogie dances with it\, its nine reveries coalescing into one long hustle. Dan Bejar’s eye may be on the exits\, but he’s not leaving anytime soon. \n— \nFunded by Canada Council for the Arts\, Government of Canada\, and Yukon Government
