SUMMARY:In the ODD Gallery: SHARP TEETH | Curated by Sanaa Humayun
DESCRIPTION:At the ODD Gallery – Dënäkär Zho \nParticipating Artists: Emily Riddle\, Faith Goodman\, Jasmine Piper\, Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet\, Mizin Shin\, Raneece Buddan & Rihab Essayh. \nOn View September 12th – October 17th\, 2024 \nSharp Teeth  investigates two related avenues of consideration: First – the use of whisper networks amongst racialized women as a form of relationship building\, and the way feminine language is used to de-legitimize the work done in these spaces. Second – how art/ curatorial relationships can be re-imagined to embody some of the reciprocal care of these racialized spaces in order to develop a better framework for curation/ art making that breaks down the current systems of patriarchy/ White Supremacy. \nThis body of work satirizes the use of feminine visual aesthetics in pop culture\, thinking about how feminine coded aesthetics often relegate feminine relationships to catty\, gossipy\, frivolous things\, and how this package can be reclaimed for a body of work that is on the surface very bright\, campy and mean\, while also holding tender relationships. Ones that are rooted in friendship and care\, ones that hold power despite being dismissed and devalued. Exploring how to bring these relationships out of the margins\, this work leans into the frivolity\, while also celebrating the deep and long lasting nature of these relationships\, without giving away the secrets held within them.

SUMMARY:ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE - Johannas Zits B2B Nicole Sleeth ARTIST TALK
DESCRIPTION:Thursday September 19th @6pm – 8pm\, in the Dënäkär Zho (KIAC) Ballroom – Bar Service Available \nJOHANNES ZITS\nWith the use of audio-visual performances\, Johannes will be sharing his exploration of the sentience of nature. In working with the natural environment\, Zits extends the notion of the performer to include nature itself. Considering nature as an equal ensures that it can be neither construed as a passive prop nor adored and fixed in the realm of the sublime. \nNICOLE SLEETH\nCentred on the female gaze as an exploration of power\, connection\, and lived experience\, Nicole’s current body of work explores themes of home and belonging\, queer domesticity in a rural setting\, vulnerability and mortality\, and her relationship with the natural landscape. Within this context\, she examines contrasts between public and private life\, outdoor domesticity\, and how memory influences present emotions through metaphor.
