This workshop is a lecture that will include a roundtable where participants can discuss their grant ideas and workshop them together. \nTuesday March 31st 6pm – 8pm @ KIAC Ballroom  \n_____________________________________________________________________________________________________ \n\nMeet our Guest Filmmakers\n\nRichard Reeves\nRichard is a kinetic film scratcher\, visual music maker\, animated traveller of time and space\, light sensitive\, spinner of zoetrope’s\, looper of loops and collector of projection bulbs for total enlightenment.  \nHe is best known for creating animations by drawing both sound and picture directly onto film and has produced award winning films that have screened around the world. \nRichard is an honorary member of the Quickdraw Animation Society and previously worked at QAS as Film Production Coordinator. He mentored workshops at the Gulf Islands Film and Television School for 10 years and taught animation courses across Canada\, Europe and South America. Richard has collaborated with artists often involving dancing human projection screens\, interactive animation installations\, online animation jams and large outdoor projections. He has attended Artist in Residence programs at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design\, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana\, Bogotá Colombia and Iris Film Collective in Vancouver BC. \nRichard continues to explore animation as a visual music time and space art form. \n_________________________________________\n\n\n\nJustine McCloskey\n\nJustine McCloskey graduated with honours from Toronto Metropolitan University’s BFA Film Studies program in 2013\, specializing in directing and production design. In 2012\, she was awarded the prestigious Norman Jewison Award for Innovation in Filmmaking and in 2013 was nominated for the Dean’s Essay Award for her essay “Grete Suffraunce: Dysentery and The Crusades.” Since then\, her writing and photography has been published internationally. \nShe attended the University of Toronto and received her MA in Art History while TA-ing media and photography courses with both UofT and OCADu. She recently worked as a Creative at HumanContact Inc. where she produced and directed commercials\, radio spots\, and internal content for clients across Canada. \nHer OAC-funded still life food photo series will be exhibited this spring\, and will be completing her LIFT-funded short film this summer. \nYou can typically find her amidst piles of cookbooks\, camera in hand! In this ode to counter-culture\, the legendary French director\, Agnes Varda discovers digital cameras and turns them on the fringes of society and those who choose alternatives to mainstream life – including herself. Her colourful cast of ‘gleaners’ – people who gather leftover crops after a harvest – exist on the edge of the fields and cities. They collect everything from food to urban waste for necessity\, for art\, and for resistance. Varda travels across France collecting/gleaning all of her interactions with the people she meets and weaving them into unexpected and touching narratives. \nThe Gleaners and I was an international hit\, resonating with and inspiring people from all parts of society and bringing Varda back into the deserved spotlight. In this documentary of scavengers\, foragers\, dumpster-divers\, thrifters\, anti-consumerists\, and artists\, Varda demonstrates all of the curiosity\, empathy\, and joy her work is known for. With over a dozen films to his name\, Kaurismäki claimed this to be his best work. His sardonic and deadpan treatment of working-class folks doing working-class things\, and going to working-class places never patronizes; instead\, it rolls along like a 1962 Cadillac convertible with the top down. Keep your eyes on the road because this hilarious comedy never announces a joke!   \nIt’s Lapland\, Finland in the 80s and times are tough at the coal mine. Taisto’s Dad has had enough and leaves him with a classic car and some important advice: get out of this dead end town\, now. What follows is Taisto’s matter of fact meander through the trials and tribulations of getting by in gritty Helsinki. Taisto finds tragedy\, love\, friendship\, betrayal. The world is cold and uncaring\, but don’t worry! Taisto doesn’t!

Kaujak (Theresia Kappianaq) and Sapa (Haiden Angutimarik) were promised to each other at birth. After the sudden death of Kaujak’s father\, her mother marries a man from another camp tearing the young lovers apart. The promise of a better life quickly turns to a nightmare\, with aggressive suitors backed by an evil shaman vying to win Kaujak’s hand. But Kaujak resists\, holding on to hope that Sapa will one day make things right. \n~~~~ \n“All of my films are based in local stories and traditions from my local area\,” said Kunuk. “For me\, a film has to not only have a strong\, unique story and characters that people can relate to\, it also has to be very accurate to the local traditions of my area. I see my role and responsibility as a filmmaker and artist as someone who can record and document our past traditions and culture for future generations\, to re-write\nour history from our perspective. 100 years from now when we are long gone\, our films will still be here to show people how it was done. You didn’t lose any time.” This December 14th catch the heist movie that established the heist movie genre on the big screen at KIAC/ Dënäkär Zho Ballroom. KIAC Classic Films presents Jules Dassin’s Rififi/Du Rififi Chez les Hommes (1955) in all its gritty tense hard-boiled pulp glory. An acclaimed director\, Jules Dassin had a long career in Hollywood in the 1940s until he was accused of being a communist and blacklisted. The film depicts Tony “Le Stephanois” who is just out of prison in Paris when his Italian pal Mario tells him about a foolproof score he’s got lined up. After seeing his old girlfriend\, Mado living large with the local gangster\, how could he really say no to some easy money. The scheme becomes more and more elaborate and the stakes get higher and higher until you could cut the tension with a knife. Rififi is famous for its 30-minute silent robbery scene – no dialogue\, no music. ASMR before ASMR! This film screening should not be missed.

I’m still the same housewife.” This November 9th\, come and enjoy the KIAC Class Films presentation of The Big City. The Big City\, or Mahanagar\, is a 1963 film by Satyajit Ray that depicts what happens when a traditional Bengali middle class family in Calcutta meets the modernity of women’s liberation and  empowerment. Arati (Madhabi Mukherjee)\, a housewife and Subrata (Anil Chatterjee)\, her husband must navigate this change in power dynamics as Subrata loses his job as a bank manager and Arati excels in her new job as a door to door salesperson. Arati’s new job moves her from housebound housewife to downtown dealmaker\, giving her independence and confidence that challenge her presumed role and her husband’s masculinity in the patriarchal world of Bengal. Now the breadwinner of the family Arati is faced with the effects of this massive upheaval of roles. Satyajit Ray depicts these rising and falling egos with nuanced dialogue and the fascinating backdrop of 1963 Calcutta.

This October 26th\, come and enjoy the KIAC Classic Films presentation of Withnail and I (1987). Written and directed by Bruce Robinson – his directorial debut and second writing credit after 1984’s The Killing Fields which earned him an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA win – and starring Paul McGann\, Richard Griffiths\, and Richard E. Grant (his debut)\, this classic film with mega cult status has heaps of quotable lines. In a haze of boozing mayhem\, two out of work actor friends resist adulthood and responsibility at the end of the 1960s in Camden Town.  After they run out of fivers for the pub\, they wind up on holiday (by mistake!) in the British countryside where they face the monotony of the real world they so desperately fear. Although sometimes despairing and definitely abrasive\, their friendship and growth is charming and highly quotable! \n\n\nFilm contains mild sex/nudity\, no violence\, severe profanity and alcohol/drug use\, and mild frightening scenes.

This has involved filmmakers (local and non-local) coming to Dawson City to experiment and work on media projects to enhance their craft. \nThe focus has gravitated toward analogue film processes (8mm and 16mm)\, and most recently involved the usage of eco-safe developers using local plants and/or caffeine. This year we are adding cameraless filmmaking\, scratch or paint directly on 16 or 35mm film. \nAn exclusive opportunity to work in Super 8 or 16mm film in a workshop environment from September 14-28 at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture. \n\nThere will be 2 mandatory get-togethers: one at the beginning and one at the end of the workshop.\nParticipants can work at thier own pace (and times) and will have access to the KIAC Darkroom/Ballroom during the dates of the workshop (September 14-28).\n\nThis is a free workshop with limited space. SUMMARY:Film Workshop: Cameraless filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:SCRATCH IT OUT! \nA great opportunity for participants to make their own 35mm animated or experimental film without a camera and without processing film. Animators like Norman McLaren and Len Lye explored the technique of direct cinema in the 1930s and almost 90 years later\, it still continuously surprises audiences. \nThe workshop will explore the multiple techniques of cameraless filmmaking and discover new ones along the way. Over the course of the week\, participants will be introduced to materials and tools that can be applied effectively through scratching\, painting and collage – directly on to the surface of motion picture film. We will also learn efficient methods of digitizing the work as moving image files using DIY scanning methods and re-purposing existing applications. \nAs the week progresses\, we take our ideas further\, shaping our projects with digital sound and music. And finally\, we will give our project life\, discovering new ways to implement finished films with popular digital editing and projection software. \nThe final workshop film will be shown at Sunday evening’s 8pm screening. \nThis workshop will take place in 3 parts\, allowing participants to work extensively on their pieces of film with the mentor available for questions and advice. \nIn the KIAC CLassroom \nTuesday\, April 15\, 6-9pm \nWednesday\, April 16\, 6-9pm \nFriday\, April 18\, Noon-3pm \nParticipants can come to one\, 2 or all 3 sessions. \nThe workshop is free.
