The Artist
in Residence Program is located in the Macaulay Residence.
Built in 1901, the home is now owned by Parks Canada as part
of the Dawson Historical Complex National Historic Site of
Canada.
General
Call
The Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) is now accepting
applications from visual artists, media artists, and interdisciplinary
artists for its 2011 Artist in Residence Program.
The residence accommodates up to two artists concurrently
for research, development and production of ongoing or new
bodies of work.
Artists may also have the opportunity
to facilitate outreach programs such as talks, workshops and
exhibitions, intended to promote interaction and professional
development, and
provide access to a diverse range of contemporary arts practices
and theories within the community.
General Call Residencies run April 21 through June 30, and
from August 21 through December 31, 2011. Participants
are responsible for all travel and personal expenses including
food and materials related to their work.

Calls
2011 Film Festival Residency
The Dawson City International Short Film Festival takes place
each spring on Easter Weekend. The 2009 Film Festival presented
screenings of over 100 short films and videos from around
the world to over 1,600 enthusiastic cinema buffs. The festival
weekend includes workshops, panel discussions and special
presentations by participating filmmakers and special guests.
Filmmakers working in all media may apply for residency dates
to coincide with the Film Festival and have the opportunity
to participate in Festival Programming. ThesIn past years,
KIAC Artists in Residence have presented their films in special
screenings and talks, facilitated workshops, and participated
in panel discussions.
The Film Festival Residency runs March 1
through April 21, 2011.

The Natural & The Manufactured: An
ODD Gallery and KIAC Artist in Residence Thematic Project
The ODD Gallery
seeks proposals from visual artists working in all media for
this yearly thematic project, which consists of two
exhibition-creation residencies leading to one gallery-based
and one outdoor installation. New projects and site-specific
ideas are encouraged, but previous work and continuing projects
may also be proposed.
The Natural & Manufactured residency
and exhibition project runs July 1 through August 21, 2011.
Applications to the N&M will be considered
for BOTH residency and exhibition components for July and
August of each year. Project activities are presented as part
of KIAC’s Yukon Riverside Arts Festival in mid-August.
The N&M re-examines the various cultural and economic
values imposed on the environment, while exploring alternative
social, economic and aesthetic strategies towards a re-interpretation
of landscape and social infrastructure.
Project activities include two six-week creation/installation
residency periods, two exhibition projects, opening receptions,
artist talks and guest lectures.
Please mark your application “Natural & Manufactured
Residency.” Artists applying for this thematic project
may also apply for residencies under the General Call for
Submissions.

Residency Program Objectives:
To provide artists with unrestricted time
and space to research, develop and produce ongoing or new
body of works/projects.
To introduce visiting artists to northern peoples, cultures
and landscapes.
To provide
the Yukon community with exposure
and access to a diverse range of contemporary Canadian
and international
arts practices and theories.
To provide outreach activities such as
talks, workshops and exhibitions, intended to promote interaction
and professional development within the community.

APPLICATION
GUIDELINES
ELIGIBILITY:
KIAC accepts applications
from visual artists, media artists and interdisciplinary artists.
Consideration will be given to professional, established and
emerging Canadian and international artists. All disciplines
will be considered including but not limited to: Painting,
Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Design, Architecture,
Photography, Installation, Performance, Video and Film, Filmmaking,
New Media, and Audio. KIAC encourages applications from artists
of diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.
ELIGIBLE PROJECTS:
Residencies are available for research,
development and production of ongoing or new bodies of work.
Artists' proposed projects should take into account KIAC's
limited resources. Projects that do not require access to
specialized equipment (currently available resources listed
below) are most suitable to the residency program. Artists
are responsible for ensuring any additional specialized equipment.

SELECTIONS: Residents
are programmed by the ODD Gallery and Residency Program Committee
composed of regional practicing artists and arts professionals.

2011 PROGRAM APPLICATION
DEADLINE: April 1, 2010. The application deadline is
for General Residencies running April
21 through June 30, and from August 21 through December 31,
2011, as well as project-based residencies: the Dawson Film
Festival Residency (March 1 to April 21, 2011) and the Natural
& The Manufactured Residency (July 1 to August 21, 2011).
Applications must be
postmarked by the application deadline. Artists must submit
a complete application package, as outlined on the application
form, that includes: Application Form - Project Description
& Artist's Statement - CV - Documentation of Work - Image
List/Description of Work Documentation - SASE
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
SESSION SCHEDULE:
Notification of results takes 8-12
weeks. Although every effort will be made to accommodate scheduling
requests of successful applicants, first choices may not be
available. Please indicate flexibility with and restrictions
on dates available in your application form. Please note that
a significant portion of our program schedule is dedicated
to specific project and partner residencies. Double check
that you are applying for the correct dates and projects.
REFERENCES:
Applicants are not required to submit letters of reference.
With permission from the applicant, KIAC may wish to contact
organizations listed on the applicant's CV/resume, where the
applicant has had past exhibitions or residencies. Reference
information will be treated confidentially.
FEES: There is
no fee charged or stipend paid for a residency. Participants
are responsible for the cost of all travel to and from Dawson
City as well as all materials related to their artwork and
for personal living expenses including food. Artists in Residence
are asked to provide one free public talk during their residency.
Artists who provide additional outreach programming through
KIAC will be paid accordingly within the current KIAC fee
structure. All successful applicants are encouraged to apply
for travel grants from the Canada Council for the Arts or
their provincial/regional arts councils; the success rate
of travel grants to our residency program are very high.
FACILITIES: The
Artist in Residence facilities are located in the Macaulay
Residence. Constructed in 1901, this 2-story home is now owned
by Parks Canada as part of the Dawson Historical Complex National
Historic Site of Canada. The building can accommodate two
individual artists concurrently. Residents are provided with
an individual studio space and bedroom, along with shared
living room, bathroom and kitchen areas. The studios measure
16' x 14' and 13' x 12' respectively and are provided with
some natural light and additional portable studio lights and
basic furnishings. There may be limited access, by special
request, to additional KIAC facilities and equipment. For
more detailed information on the Residence facilities and
additional KIAC facilities go the Additional
Information for Applicants section on our website. Contact
the Residency Coordinator for details.
COLLABORATION:
If applying as a collaborative team, both artists should submit
separate applications along with a joint project proposal.
Work samples may be individual or examples of previous collaboration.
COUPLES: Couples
(who are both artists) may apply individually for concurrent
residency. It is possible that only one or the other might
be accepted.
GUESTS: KIAC is
unable to invite guests, including partners, family or friends,
to accompany artists in residence.
PETS: No pets
are allowed at the residence. Artists with pets must make
arrangements for the care of their pets before being accepted
into the residence.
SMOKING: Smoking is not permitted
in the residence.
DOCUMENTATION OF WORK REQUIREMENTS:
DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL WORK
ALL DISCIPLINES:
Current work is requested. The nature of the work sample submitted
should correspond to the nature of the work proposed during
the residency. An applicant's documentation of work is the
most significant feature of his or her application.
Please Include One of the Following:
a) A CD with 10 to 20 images saved as PC compatible .jpg files
at 72 dpi in RGB colour mode. Label each image with a number
and title – start the first nine images with a zero
(01title.jpg, 02title.jpg…10title.jpg) to insure they
are presented in the order you wish. Don’t submit any
other component of your proposal digitally or electronically
– all other requested material must be submitted in
paper format. Include a numbered image list in paper format
with the artist’s name, title of work, medium, dimensions
and date of completion.
Or For Film/Video/Audio/Time-based Work
b) A DVD or a CD with video files that open in Quicktime or
Windows Media Player, or an Audio CD, clearly marked with
the artist’s name, title of work, and duration - include
in paper format a list of works, outline or description of
content. Running time is not to exceed 10 minutes with an
exception for Filmmakers submitting a Feature Length or Short
Film exceeding 10 minutes – please submit a condensed
copy not exceeding 30 minutes or cue your tape to a desired
starting point.
It is the responsibility of Applicants
to test and ensure that submitted materials are readable.
DOCUMENTATION OF WORK
RETURN: Documentation of work will be returned only
if you provide a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) adequately
sized with sufficient postage. While every precaution will
be taken to handle documentation of work with care, KIAC cannot
be responsible for their returned condition. Please avoid
sending one-of-a-kind or an only copy of an item. International
submissions should state on the customs declaration that the
enclosed material is for cultural purposes only and is of
no commercial value. Artists are responsible for all costs
of mailing/shipping submissions to KIAC and for their return.
