Nalbinding Workshop Instructor: Elizabeth

pm
Nalbinding, or looped needle-netting, is a traditional
Scandinavian way of creating fabric by using a needle
to
thread lengths of yarn in linked loops. Though not widely
practiced at present, examples can be found in
ancient artefacts including: shoes and socks made out
of plant fibres in the Middle East, food strainers and
mittens of wool and animal hair from Bronze Age Scandinavia,
and 3,000 year old berets found in the far
west of China. In this short workshop, participants
will learn the Karelian nalbinded stitch, and will be
able to
try it in a variety of local and natural materials,
examples which may include: silk thread, plant roots
and
stems, wire, leather lace, hide strips, and wool yarns.
